Windsock on a tree.

Hey guys,

I'm thinking about putting a windsock up on the river, there is a AWOS station 9nm SE of me, but I'm not sure the winds down low on the river are always that inline with the winds reported by thst AWSOS. Thought is, there is a small island in the middle with some trees, my thought was to attach a pole to the top of a tree with a 12x48 orange windsock, figure it will be in clean air that way.

Thoughts?

Re: Windsock on a tree.

One of the beauties of flying floats is that you spend a lot of time over or around water, and most every takeoff and landing is on water. So, you learn to "read" the water to determine wind direction and velocity.

That was a significant part of every float student's training when I was doing float ratings....learning to read the water.

A wind sock on a water body is pretty useless, unless the river is VERY narrow, and the windsock is VERY high up, but even then, all I care about is what the wind is doing on the surface, and the water will tell me that.

Hey, if you can get a neighbor to put that thing in the top of the tree for you, why not? Attaching a pole with big sock to the top of a tree could be "interesting".

Me, I don't like heights, and I hate ladders, especially ones leaning against something wobbly, like a tree.... :D

How about just a flag - preferably U.S. or rebel flag
