Winslow, AZ (KINW)

We had a real nice flight today starting from Moriarty, NM (0E0) and landing Springerville, AZ (D68) for their aviation expo and dedication of their new terminal building. Next it was off to Saint Johns (KSJN) to gas up at the only airport I know that doesn't charge for the service and also has the cheapest gas around. After that we headed to Winslow, AZ (KINW) for lunch at the on-airport mexican food restaurant. What a hidden jewel. The runways and taxiways looked like they were a bit under maintained (grass and bushes growing up through the pavement on runway 4) but the ramp in front of the FBO was in very good condition and they were very helpful and had complimentary tea, coffee, and water available while we waited for the restaurant to open. Then it was back home to Moriarty. All in all a very nice play date with the C180.

My wife and I taught at Tohatchi on the Navajo Res. I instructed out of Gallup and flew helicopters in the 717th Med Det, company now, at Santa Fe. Tom Horan was attorney for Albuquerque and our unit commander. Later flew for Brentco Aerial Patrol out of Moriarty. I really miss the desert.

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Re: Winslow, AZ (KINW)

You know, they actually wrote the song at the Der Wienersnitchel (now the Dog House) on Route 66 in Flagstaff. They tried using Flagstaff in the song, but it didn't rhyme with anything. There is a plaque at the Dog House commemorating it. Winslow needs all the help it can get though. I kept my airplanes there for a few years in Lindburg's hanger. Cost me $150 a month for three Caravans. Besides the drive back to Flagstaff, Winslow is great for flying. It practically never gets any weather, aside from winds. No traffic, except the occasional student up from the valley. Very pretty to fly there at sunset, especially up by the Hopi Buttes. Lucky thing that meteor just missed the airport.

Re: Winslow, AZ (KINW)

I landed the 180 at Winslow and spent the night about 23 years ago. Then up to Grand Canyon and over to Laughlin before the new runway. I always remember flying over Albuquerque at about 12000 feet and watching a 737 taking off to the east and moments later he'd turned west as he climbed by us pretty close and he said "see you later Cessna".

I stopped in Winslow a couple of months ago bringing a new to me 1958 C-182 (wing-x, sportsman, vg's flint tanks, RMD tips) home, the Mexican food was great.

Flying is dangerous. If you think otherwise, you are new at this sport. Mind the gravity not the gap.

I'm in NE Oklahoma, OK18 is my home strip. We have a hanger apartment and camping for cross country travelers.

Meteor Crater

I know a pilot in a hot rod experimental took his pax wife below the rim of Meteor Crater. Dipped down to have a look at the ash pile in the center and came back up with an aileron roll upon exiting the rim... and was on his way. Wonder if he's still alive to tell anybody about it?

Re: Winslow, AZ (KINW)

On one of my first simulated IMC flights from Flagstaff to Winslow my CFI and I were a couple thousand AGL and he says, "Take your foggles off for a bit and enjoy the view." We were right over the big hole.

In August of 1964 Captain Kidd, an American Airlines Captain who was moonlighting as a ferry pilot, "landed" a new C150 that he was supposed to deliver to Cessna dealer in L.A. on the bottom of the crater. At some point after this event and his recovery, the Captain was apparently promoted by American Airlines to fly the 747. You can read more here:

Here's another vote for E&O Kitchen, right at Winslow Airport. Definitely worthy for the $100 Burrito or as a x-country stop. It's a family run place and they are very nice folks as well.

Also worth mentioning, Winslow's avgas is always cheaper than Flagstaff's.
