Re: Wolf at Schafer

There Is a big difference between average and record book animals, I have been hunting all my life and have bagged alot of average game, but no record book animals.
Saying there are no 150# pound wolves would be like saying there are no 150# cougar or no 400 class bull elk. If you do a search they are out there, but the average person probably has not seen one.

dawg,
that's good info. thanks

They're saying we have 3000 wolves in MN. Check out how small a zone they cover, how concentrated they are. I might also add the range wont expand much more. The rest of the state is Ag land and open. As mentioned earlier we have an aggressive trapping program. Close to 200 a year. Maybe someday we'll get to hunt them like you can out west now. Lots of liberals around here.

Sounds like you are in a similar situation to us in Oregon with cougar. To bad we have to hire gov. trappers with our taxes when there are plenty of sportsmen that would gladly pay for for the tag.

Re: Wolf at Schafer

Since this thread has morfed into a discussion of the wolf re-introduction program I will dip my oar into the muddy waters here.

I was born and raised in Central Idaho right in the middle of this mess and was living there when the whole fiasco started.

1 There were real, wild, local wolves living in Idaho and Montana at the time of the restocking. IDF&G and the feds knew about them and violated the endangered species act by proceeding with the "illegal" plan but why let truth and facts get in the way right

2 In a healthy population of wolves with an intact pack social structure it is generally agreed that out of a full pack only the "alfa" pair will breed. There are many many old maid bitch wolves that help to raise litters within the pack but do not breed on their own. The male pack leader will not tolerate subordinate males breeding and the female will not either. This is not carved in stone as occasionally a subordinate female will breed, when this happens she will usually be killed or driven out. Without the pack to help she will have a real tough time of feeding herself let alone a batch of cubs. I have seen this succeed here in Alaska because the bitch fed on spawned salmon long enough to get the cubs weaned.

3. By trapping and transplanting anything less than a full pack there is no social structure anymore. Instead of one breeding pair out of ten to fifteen animals you now have every pair breeding. This is one of the biggest reasons that the stocking program has exploded was faster than anyone will admit to.

4. Wolves do not respect boundary lines, when the population grows sufficiently the weaker/younger animals will move to fresh areas. This is why there were wolves everywhere and not in just one spot on earth. The people in charge of this travesty will not admit that there have been "stocked" wolves from the stocking in the park area all the way to the cascades on the west, Colorado on the south, beyond the Missouri in the east and unlimited on the north.

5 The big game populations in Idaho have crashed, the wolves are beginning to take game from the cougars and have in fact begun to hunt down and feed on cougars.

6 There has been a tremendous sale of wolf tags in Idaho this year, hopefully this will result in lots of dead wolves but I don't think it will. These things are an "apex" predator" and are extremely intelligent and resilient. The only way wolves were killed off down south was by the use of poisons, shooting, trapping, hunting, and in some strange cases roping from horseback #-o just did not do the job.

7 Lest anyone think that I am a wolf hater, that is absolutely not so, I love to see them, hear them. I don't even really hate the idea of them being put back into the rocky mtn area. What I really hate is the FACT that the bastards that pushed it got away with breaking every one of their own laws and rules and our own federal govt. aided and abetted it and continue to lie about it to this day. :^o [-X

Rant finished,

"Well folks I did a little research. As with our MN wolves, the western wolf and the management of these animals is all public information. From the Western District Supervisor USDA/APHIS/Wildlife Services 9134 West Blackeagle Drive
Boise, ID 83709 "The biggest wolf we've ever weighed was 135 pounds and it was full of calf meat. We've only had a few more that were in the 120's. Most are 90 - 110 pounds. We have taken a few adults that weighed less than 70." [end Quote]

It's always a #400 blackbear, a #200 Halibut, a 60" moose, a 7x7 Elk or perhaps a #190wolf.

Looks like your Western District Supervisor needs to get out in the field a little more. So far we have 2 nice pictures these small 90-100# lap dogs.

Re: Wolf at Schafer

Actually, there were pictures of a similar wolf, called the wolf killed under the new Idaho wolf permits in the papers in North Idaho. And yes with help in initially getting it off the ground and individual could hold an animal of that size for a picture.

Just happen to have a link to the newspaper where goldfinch may have got his picture. Seems like you may not get this paper in PA.

Re: Wolf at Schafer

Hi dawgdriver,

I am making no statements relating to this thread. I am limiting my comments to this particular picture. It has all the hallmarks of an urban legend starting with the "facts" being garbled. The place of the shooting is attributed to:

Edson, Alberta
Gogama, Ontario
Sun Valley, Idaho
Drayton Valley, Alberta
And three other vague references that I can't pinpoint.

The reported weights vary from 180lbs to 230lbs.

I traced the photo's first appearance to as far back as February, 2003 (possibly, but not verified to 2000) and it has been used in "news" reports and references at least 12 times with different dates/places/stories up to the current date.

That is the information as I have it. Could be wrong - wouldn't be the first time. However, this particular photo smells like a duck.

Re: Wolf at Schafer

I've seen a lot of wolves in four states and western Canada and I've never seen one even close to being that size. Look at the head. it is almost comical.
Not saying there aren't big wolves...just not that big. Someone has been funnin.

Maybe the guy is a midget

Re: Wolf at Schafer

Go get 'em Governor Otter!

It's about time the state's stopped abrogating their rights and allowing the Federal Government to dictate how they manage anything.

To REALLY send a message to the Feds, every state ought to tell them where to shove their Federal Funding!

Re: Wolf at Schafer

One of the things that pisses me off the worst about this nonsense is that there were wolves in Idaho before the re introduction and the people who forced this issue down the throats of the inter mountain states KNOWINGLY AND WITH MALICE AFORETHOUGHT INTRODUCED A FOREIGN SPECIES OF WOLF INTO THESE AREAS IN DIRECT VIOLATION OF THE ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT AND OTHER LAWS.

This crap of violating what ever laws they want and enforcing what ever they want has been going on for many years and the rest of the country really should wake up and look around.

I guided in northern Idaho for several years and was born and raised in central Idaho and I can guarentee that there was a viable population of native wolves in the state.

I don't think you read it correctly. There are still FWS Special Agents enforcing the ESA.

Arround here they are still trying to figure a way to remove the dams. Copco and Iron dams do not get much national press but when the wacko's set there sights on Hoover dam they will get more atention.

The Calfornia Grizly is no more. I think they need to RE INTRODUCE the grizly into Yosemite. And as long as we are doing it lets pick the bigest ones we can find. Bring them from Alaska.

Maybe they'd eat some of those pesky black bears. Or climbers.
