Tons of automation for sure, but you still have to remember to disarm the NAV function when you get a vector #-o

Glad I'm not the only one who could forget something like this

Re: Zee Germans are coming!

I would say that the captain needs to review his cockpit resource management skills.

He gets exasperated and throws his hands up when the first officer makes a mistake on the read back, yet he can't understand the controller himself when various fixes are given.

This is a sure fire way to alienate your crew which raises the potential for an incident exponentially.

It is also a good way to end up on the dreaded 'Do Not Pair With' list.

He wasn't upset with the FO. Approach assigned him 28L after they were set up for 28R. Then App switched him back to 28L. That can be frustrating.

Re: Zee Germans are coming!

Getting switched from 28L to 28R, and back again in SFO is a normal occurance, especially since the runways are so close together. There are other airports where you can be switched to the other side of the airport at the last minute and this can be problematic for FMS RNAV aircraft, as a new arrival, transition and proper approach has to be loaded and briefed.

In fact, due to 28L and 28R non-standard runway separation in SFO, flights must be staggered as to not pass the aircraft on the parellel approach, and if you do, a special break out procedure is initiated for that aircraft to go around.

I always brief the passengers about this as it can be quite alarming to some to see another airliner flying right next to you.

Re: Zee Germans are coming!

I took a captain of one of these things for a spin in the drifter a while back, He said he was keen to land it so I thought why not hes a much better trained pilot than I! I thought it would be best to take over again when he began to flare my 200 kg plane about 100 feet off the ground by putting the nose about 30 degrees up into the air. Once I Ha put it on the ground he apologized and said that despite flying hundreds of passengers from London to Sydney 4 days before, its been years since his actually flown an aeroplane.

This confirms what he meant! a great watch! thanks for posting, its really nice to see what goes on in those big beasts!
