Yep, that's how I was taught to do them as well. My CFI was a retired (in the late '70s) Air Force fighter pilot, so I don't know if that's how everybody learned them back then, or if I just got lucky.
I do, however, know I was lucky to have Jack Tetrick as my CFI. He was great! When I told him I wanted to learn spin recovery (still working toward my PPL), he said "Yep - that's coming soon," and sure enough, we did them. In a Tomahawk, no less. (Don't bother with the "Traumahawk" replies - I know the nickname, and still loved flying that fun, responsive airplane. Maybe it's why I never had an issue transitioning to "old school" airplanes later on?)
