0-300 question

Hey you 0-300 conti gurus. Is it possible to put an angled starter drive from a D model onto a B model so I can run a vacuum pump?

Thanks

Re: 0-300 question

Quite possible, my engine was converted several years ago. I believe continental has a service letter on this, if I remember correctly. I'll see what I can dig up in my logs. Here are some pictures of mine getting freshened up a little bit:

Thanks Jered. I'm curious if te whole accessory case needs to be changed or if the angle drive just bolts on. As far as I can tell, they are the same cases. Only differences are the 8 vs 6 bolt crank flange and the angle drive starter adaptor.

Not possible.

I know the rear case is different. The main case may be different also.

Re: 0-300 question

Just looked at my logs, I have a 337 stating that the case was replaced with with a d model case, generator replaced with alternator, and vaccum pump installed. Hope this helps. If you need more info, I can dig deeper.

Case as in accessory case or the complete crank case?

Looks like the case, not accessory case:

Re: 0-300 question

I know a guy with a 170B which has a belt-drive vacuum pump--
it mounts in front of the #5 cylinder.
Needs a 172-style nosebowl however.

What's wrong with a venturi?
Simple, never needs an overhaul...
if it ices up you've probably got bigger problems to worry about.
Main drawback IMHO is gyros don't spin up until a minute or two after takeoff.

Maybe a Garmin G5 would be a worthwhile mod.

The plane is already set up for a vacuum pump. And as nice as a G5 is, it does not meet requirements night flight in Canada. It is on a 172.
It's moot really, I've found out the a B model engine is not certified on the mid 60s 172. So I'm on the hunt for a D model now.

Re: 0-300 question

Continental gave guidance on how to convert one model O-300 to another O-300.
I'd talk to someone at TCM to get a copy of that.

The O-300 IPC Shows a different part number for the accessory case for the O-300-D
