Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

0-360 Piper Pacer with Constant Speed Propeller

This is sort of a continuation of some comments made by me in the Madras Super Tip thread. I mentioned the 0-360 A1P conversion that I have STC'd for the Piper PA-22-20 and had a couple of people comment on it. I have uploaded some pictures of the airplane and if anyone has any questions about it, please ask here.

Thanks.

Brian,

Are you using the A1P engine to keep the option open to go to a CS prop? That's a nice looking airplane, no doubt. In my experience, squaring off the tips and adding droops or even just plates gave the Pacer enough more wing to work really well on floats as well. An O 360 and a CS prop should really make it a blaster, both for takeoff and cruise.

Mike,

We used the A1P because it has the front mounted prop governor, we did not want to have to cut into the firewall for the governor mounted on the accessary case. We attacked this project because all the other STC's available are for fixed pitch prop only. We have, however, been thinking of revising the STC to include the other models of 0-360's. I will have to come up with a drawing for installing a "pocket" in the firewall for the governor and probably some other miscellaneous installation instructions and drawings.

I have had a few guys inquire about the STC who are running floats, but so far we have not sold a STC to anyone else and the one pictured is the only one flying. Our limiting ourselves to the A1P has been a deterrent because the engine is not as readily available as the other models. I have the airplane in my shop now and will be taking some pictures with the skin off. We are going to install one of our extended skylights while we got her down to the tubbing. Fortunately, this airplane has been hangered all its life and the tubing is in excellent condition with very little surface discoloring. So its just a tear down, inspect and recover. The owner wants to go back to the same color scheam so we aren't even repainting the metal.

Brian.

Steve,

It is a nice looking airplane, so with new fabric it should be even better.

Have you considered adding the MTV 15 (no relation, by the way) prop to the STC? That would really make it howl and lighten it up as well as getting rid of the restricted operating range. It's approved on that engine in the Husky.

The A-1P isn't a real common engine. Hadn't thought about the governor.

I was talking to someone recently & they mentioned that MT sells an electrically-controlled variable pitch prop . That sounds interesting-- depending on where the prop weight (and price!) comes in, that could be a real good mod for lots of different engine installations for which a c/s isn't available. I'd love to have something like that on my C150/150TD.

Cessna Skywagon -- accept no substitute!

jr,

Nope

I'm still running the Hartzell, and having the hub eddy current tested every year.

I love the MT props. I've run a couple of them on Huskys, and one on a 185. In my opinion, they are a great prop. They had a few problems early on, but their customer service proved to be excellent, and I don't think they've had any more issues since.
