Hey Bill. From what I can tell the 180/185 site only has copies of the stc for $50. Which after 2007 does not work anymore to my understanding. Since the you must have the permission of the stc holder. Which the only one I know of is frank Shea for $500. This is on 180's. not 182's by the way. Know of anything other than that. Sure is frustrating to have to pay $500 to swap a motor that is virtually the same.

Hey 55:
My 1953 180 has a field approved O 470 L engine in it. Assume yours a J? The paperwork was processed in AK some time ago, but it might be another avenue to discuss with your FSDO if the STC cost is tough to swallow. Not sure what you'd have cost wise into the field approval. My 180 has a later model cowl to match, with the air intake up under the spinner.

Thanks flynengr. That's what I understand on the 182. I have the 180. Which is a K model motor. Exactly same as an L w different induction. Exactly same shit goin on but the words aren't just right. So frustrating when u have to throw common sense in the trash and try and be an attorney to fly. Logic does not matter. Only paperwork. I gotta get a hold of what y'all are looking at and read it. Thanks for all the help guys! Hoping I can figure out a way to save the $500 on a piece of paper.

I went back and edited my post when I realized 180Marty posted the parts book info on the previous page and my reply didn't really answer your question. If it would be helpful to you, PM me your email address and I will scan the field approval for the L engine on my plane and send it to you. It's a little different being an A going to an L, but who knows, it may help with your FSDO.

When I replaced the A on my 1954 180, I went with the K since it required no STC because it was on the Type Data Certificate. It does bug a person when the crank counter weights are the main difference between a K and R basic engine. Something else I always found interesting was---my friend had a 1955 180 with a J that red lined at 2550 and the timing was 22 degrees BTC and my A was 2600 with timing at 26 degrees. They both had the same cylinders.
