Re: 10/1/2010 - Edwards AFB dry lake bed

Interesting question that someone might want to ask the folks putting this event on:

A significant portion of the Rosamond Dry Lake bed is not within the Edwards AFB airspace complex on the sectional. There is IMHO enough room to land a medium size transport aircraft on the part of the lake bed lying outside the restricted area.

What would prevent someone from flying to, and landing on, the lake bed just outside the military airspace and taxi-ing up to 100 feet away from the official "event"?

I know that many R/C model airplane fliers use that same "outside" portion of the lake bed on a routine basis without being chased off by AP's or "black SUV" types.

Rosmond is the smaller lake bed and off to the the West edge of R-2515. Muroc, Rogers, is the Main lakebed with the compass rose, etc. I saw the Enterprize land on the lakebed when I was just a kid. My first lakebed landing at EDW was a proud day.

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

It is limited to 100 aircraft and they are using lottery to determine who goes. They anticipate a large interest in the event. I did the online app already hoping to check it out. Sounds interesting.

If I get back to SoCal from Birmingham, AL by Thursday night, I may sign up and drive out there. Might be pushing it, though. I see. It didn't say there's a limit of people driving in.

Re: 10/1/2010 - Edwards AFB dry lake bed

No LSA's  , but doesn't mention anything about experimentals.

The dry lakebed at Edwards Air Force Base in California has seen lots of aviation history in the making, and on October 1 another first will take place there -- a fly-in for general aviation aircraft. Just 100 pilots will be drawn by lottery to land on the 21-square-mile Rosamond Dry Lake, which has been the site of aviation research and testing for more than 50 years. Historic events at Edwards include the Bell X-1 tests that first broke the sound barrier and the first landings of the space shuttle. Pilots can enter the lottery online, but must meet strict criteria, including a minimum of 200 hours of flight time, liability insurance, and a background check. Only single- and twin-engine GA aircraft are permitted, no jets, gliders, LSAs or helicopters; warbirds will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Pilots must be prepared for high and gusty winds, and must be willing to land on dry packed mud. Click here to review the requirements and enter; the drawing will be held September 10.

The fly-in will feature a pancake breakfast, a briefing from the Air Force Flight Test Center commander on the mission and current programs, a detailed explanation of the R-2508 airspace surrounding the base, techniques on navigating the airspace and avoiding traffic conflicts, a presentation on women in the flight test community, and a visit from Pancho Barnes during a catered lunch. The only fee is $25 for the two meals. There is a possibility of a military aerial demonstration and static display. Drive-in visitors are also welcome to the event, but each person in the car also must pre-register online. Anyone attempting to enter without prior permission, by either land or air, will be turned away, the Air Force says.

Maybe a TFR? I've landed on the west end of that DLB 2x over the years in glider.

Re: 10/1/2010 - Edwards AFB dry lake bed

I think I found the answer...

The actual base property apparently encompasses both dry lake beds, but the restricted airspace does not extend to the west edge of Rosamond lake.

So you can fly over the west side of the lake but if you land you will be landing on military property, which is subject to their limit of 100 airplanes.

Like someone already said, been there landed on that.

Re: 10/1/2010 - Edwards AFB dry lake bed

Good luck getting picked guys. I just got this from my brother:

I'm sort of in charge of this. We have 1800+ entrants right now, but will only pick a 100 names out of a hat. This is why I can't come to the farm that weekend.

guycole,

Is she still alive? My brother gave me a DVD of her movie for Christmas (very good by the way). Much better then the Aviator IMO.

If she is alive, isn't she kinda PO'd at the US Air Force? ...but I will ask. PG

Here is how Poncho is showing up:

She died at around age 75--not sure when that was. We are having a look alike (actor) fly in on a biplane, not sure what type, dressed in character. She's supposed to walk around and insult people.

Re: 10/1/2010 - Edwards AFB dry lake bed

Mom says Poncho patted me on the head and said "what a cute little boy" at the North Edwards grocery store when I was 1 and a half. Mom said she looked pretty rough then.

Patrol Guy: If it will improve my selection options, I will walk around w/a unlit cigar and insult people.

Thanks for the info and good luck to all of us (including myself) who applied.
