11/23/13 Breakfast Flyin Candy Kitchen NM (CANCELED!!)

Hello everyone:

Zane, I was a good boy and added this to the upcoming event calendar, but also wanted to put in the Event section.

Will be having a flyin breakfast at Candy Kitchen, NM from 9:00am to 11:00 am on 11/23/13. Candy Kitchen is a really pretty and interesting spot. The strip is about 7,200 feet in elevation. There are 2 strips about 4,000 feet long. One strip is mainly east / west and the cross wind is more north-east / south-west. There are some hazards around, so if you are coming be sure and PM me so I can get you info. We will charge $7.00 per head for breakfast burritos and coffee. All proceeds go to the NM Pilot's Association and there backcountry committee to fund improvements to NM strips.

GPS coordinates on Google Earth are:; 34 degrees 54 minutes 10.61 seconds N / 108 degrees 30 minutes 52.26 seconds W. Strip is NOT on sectional, so if you are coming, make sure you take the time to locate it and have a good handle on where it is. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

I have added a photo album in case you are interested in seeing some more photos:

Hope to see you all there.

Regards, Larry

Thanks. As soon as I add the sidebar where stuff like that can be seen on the forum pages, it's a good idea to post in both locations.

Re: 11/23/13 Breakfast Flyin Candy Kitchen NM

I have heard from a few people confused about the location of Candy Kitchen, so i thought I would add this:

1. There are not a lot of charts that display Candy Kitchen. I looked on Sky Vector, AOPA, Shortfield.com and NMpilots.org and none of those resources have the airstrip on it. However, I went back into my archives and a 2001 Albuquerque sectional displayed Candy Kitchen (I use Sky Vector, so don't know if the current sectionals have it). Also I have a 2005 version of the NM State Aero Map, which showed it (in current versions it has been deleted). The airstrip was displayed as NM36.

2. For those that still remember what a VOR is, a 85 degree radial from the Zuni VOR (113.4) crosses right over Candy Kitchen. From the Gallup VOR (115.1) a 141 degree radial crosses right over. From the Albuquerque VOR (113.2) a 252 degree radial crosses right over.

3. Highway 53 goes south from Grants, NM. It travels south 20 or 30 miles and then turns east to Ramah NM. The El Morro Natioanl Monument is just off Highway 53 about 1/2 way between where it turns west and Ramah. There is a highway that turns south from 53 and travels about 10 or 15 miles south to Candy Kitchen. That highway intersects Highway 53 just a few miles west of El Morro National Monument.

4. If you go to Goggle Earth with the coordinates listed here, you will see the airport icon if you have it turned on. 34°54'09.15" N 108°30'49.64" W

I tried to copy and past Google Earth image, but didn't seem to get it done? Zane, sorry to be so technologically challenged, help!!!!!!

Hope that helps you find your way!!!

Don't heistate to PM with questions!!

Regards, Larry

I'll be there if I can. Thanks for the heads up Larry. I just got the Maule the other day.
Can't wait for my first fly-in.

Tragically, ATXCitab (Hank Sasser) perished in a crash in August 2014. He was a great guy and will be missed. -Z

Rezrider:

Send me a PM with your email and I will add to the list.

Last week, weather was looking stellar, but started changing over the weekend.

I will put you on our list and we will probably make a go / nogo decision on Wed.

Hopefully it will be a go.

I will keep everyone updated on this post as well.

Zane:

Went to the event calendar to delete Candy Kitchen and it was already showing up (11/23) as over? Went ahead and deleted it just in case, but I wonder if I entered it wrong in the calendar. It did say 11/23 on it???

Thanks!! Larry

That's a bummer, the weather is not looking great for G-town this weekend either. Next time.
How does that strip do with moisture, does it drain well and dry out after a while?

RR:

Probably would depend on the weather and amt of moisture received.

But according to owner, it sits at the bottom of a shallow valley and can be pretty muddy.

Will arrange for alternate data and look foward to inspecting that new Maule then.
