1600NM over (11) days (CHG#20)

Surface weather and winds aloft are forecasted to be really good for a “Low & Slow” cruise eastbound and return tomorrow! Charging my VIRB tonight.

I’m heading for Sisters early morning...

Comments welcome.

Re: Newport (KONP) -> Sisters (6K5) ETD 2021.03.31 06:00 PDT

I couldn’t get up early this morning. Been “Burning the candle at both ends” and decide to stand down.

I’m doing laundry and taking a long hot bath. Hopefully, tomorrow I’ll climb onboard and take a trip over the Cascades...Spring in the high desert is exquisite!

My apologies for the prelude of esoteric excitement!

Carry on men...

2021.04.01 04:00 PDT: Ready to depart to Sisters (6K5). But, weather forecast was wrong! KONP has the only ceiling in the entire Western US. Capt. Cook was correct.

Re: Newport (KONP) Filed a Speci VFR now Albany for fuel

Because of my late departure, I arrived at the base of the Cascades a little bit too late. The afternoon desert winds started and I wasn’t completely comfortable crossing the peaks. So I went down to Florence got fuel and returned. Insanely beautiful today. Video tonight.

Re: Newport (KONP) winds aloft a little strong (CHG#4)

Departing SVFR this morning. Called 122.50 FSS and received SVFR clearance. Today was another stellar experience cruising central Oregon:

Caution: SVFR on the Oregon Coast can be dangerous.

Wednesday 2021.04.07.CatalinaIsland

The plan is to fly out to Catalina. I’ll see if the headmaster will let me land on the soccer field at Toyon. “I love L.A.”

Re: Catalina Island VIDEO unreal (CHG#10)

The director of CIMI of Toyon Bay (Formerly known as Catalina Island School) advised that the CEO only allows emergency services helicopters on campus. But, he would drive up to “Airport in The Sky” (AVX) and pick me up tomorrow! I’m still classified as a VIP!

Image

It will be fun to take a few pictures and see the old classrooms and dorms. There’s a free climbing bolt we drilled for top roping on a rock pinnacle 44 years ago. It was a Chouinard (now Black Diamond) expansion bolt and hanger, same used in Yosemite. I really want to see if it is still holding!

The route @ 09:00 PDT KTOA -> AVX:

The switchbacks, the bumpy roads and a 1960’s pickup truck are classic Toyon! When were you there?

Boots on the ground at Toyon Bay today. Everyone is so friendly, I had such a warm welcome. And my climbing bolts are still there!

As I flew home I made this short VIDEO. I was thinking how fortunate it is to meet good people doing good things!

Re: Boots on the Ground, Toyon Bay VIDEO (CHG#11)

Time to reflect and move on... “A hui hou” SoCal!

Today I have lunch with a representative from RHC Technical Support division. RHC’s support is mind blowing! The best in the industry according to Vertical and other publications.

Soon it will be time for aloha and start north. My preliminary planning for first leg:

The roads are even worse than ever! Jaw breaking and a few spots are simply dangerous. I recommend Dramamine or Scopolamine to those unsuspecting travelers.

I remember a long time ago, on the island, my friend had a flatbed truck which had only shoe brakes. The brakes faded (Swains Canyon) and the rig went off the road and almost went over a cliff about to fall. It literally was divine intervention that nobody died.
