172 nose wheel field approval?

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Hi-New to the forum. Here is a pic of the nose fork on an R172E (T-41). The R172E only lists 6.00 x6 tires all the way around and the "206" fork on the equipment list. My parts manual lists the PN's.... Nose Fork 1243623-2, Bolt AN5-17A, Washer AN960-516L, and Nut NAS679A5.

The strut is a little underinflated in the pic and once I inflated it to the proper PSI the plane seems to have a more nose high attitude compared to a standard 172. It does require a bit more flare to hold the nose wheel off the ground, but I have a skid on the tail and I have yet to drag it. When I get a little more adventurous I may try to the tundra tire worksheet/field approval and go to a 7.00 up front and 8.00 on the mains.

Sorry BM. The big fork was not on the optional equipment list for all 182's. I assume the same for 172's as well. I do not know what specific years they were optional on but I do know that they were not optional on 182B's.

On my first 182B we put a fork from a 206. My local mechanic got a hold of the fsdo in 2001 and they said not to even think about it. Called an FBO in Challis, ID and they said bring it up, no sweat. The Boise fsdo said just to find a copy of an existing firld aproval for a 182B and do the exact same job. Called it a follow on field approval I think.

On the second 182B we put on a 310 fork. The new mechanic called the same fsdo in 2008 as my first mechanic and they just said to wright up what we wanted to do and they approved it without a copy of an existing field approval.

Now I understand that not all fsdo's are created equal. And some mechanics are looked on more highly at the fsdo that others.

Now who has a coppy of the trundra tire work sheet that they would post?

Re: 172 nose wheel field approval?

I got the field approval to change the nose tire from the 8.50 to a 7.00. A world of difference! The aircraft now sits higher but close to the same attitude as with standard tires.
The field approval is good when using the Landis nose fork with 8.50s on the mains and a 7.00 on the nose. I'd be happy to send a copy of the approval to anyone that would be interested.

Hey Robert, What model 172 do you have and did you have any issues with brake and tire clearance with the 8:50's?

Robert,

Did you notice any speed change going from the 8.50 to the 7.00? Which FSDO did you work through?

And yes, I'm interested in a copy of your approval form.

It's a 1973 172M. No problem with tire clearence to the brake calipers, it's close though. I didn't notice much of a speed drop when I went to 8.50s all around. Maybe a few mph, so I again didn't notice much change when I went to the smaller 7.00
Craig, I went through the FSDO at KYIP, Willow Run. Email me and I'll get you a copy of the field approval.

Re: 172 nose wheel field approval?

What about 8.00 mains 7.00 nose on a 182c with a T-21 fork, I was told it is the same fork as the 310 [it has the same tabs that need ground off]... I got this nose wheel field approved for 6.00's all around, and they whined about the firewall issue. My IA countered them that back, noting this aicraft in the 70's had a heavy duty nose wheel installed for about 6 years, 6.00 tire. [it was in the logs]... I feel I barely got by a couple years ago, and would be pushing my luck to try for the 7.oo nose 8.00 mains.. but i feel this would be a great combo. essentially stock. nose 1 inch smaller than mains.. i.e. 5.00 nose 6.00 mains.. anybody done this..
