180/185 fly-in Mcminnville Oregon

They are here thru the week and are arriving daily, probably 30 plus here now.
Interesting, there is not one tent on site!
There is one Wagon here with tires bigger than 8:50x6.
Here are a couple of pics that I'm trying to rap my head around, these planes aren't fast. (maybe in the backcountry platform)
So why would you do this to a 180 or a 185?

Well good thing they didn't let you join their "club"... until now I had no idea a tail wheel fairing even existed, he must really need that extra .15 kts. =D> #-o

Been thinking about rolling the plane out on the line just to give them something to talk about. :D

Do you need an impromptu influx of big wheeled party crashers to come over, pitch some tents and fly the river??

180/185 fly-in Mcminnville Oregon

It's like the guy that buys a new F350, installs a lift kit, big tires, 12,000lb winch and then never takes it off the asphalt. Why?
I think that's the first tailwheel faring I have ever seen and couldn't believe they were on Skywagons.
I do believe in our freedoms to do as we please so it's really none of my business what anyone does to their toy.
There were some very nice Wagons there.

My comment about parking my plane on the line has to do with the snooty attitude displayed by some in that club. My plane being a 182 with a tailwheel on it would have definitely give some of them something to talk about.
So I guess the club and I both have a beef. Although I'm not really to concerned and I'm having a ball in my bastard child.

having trouble loading the gravel bar pic.
65 W of ANC, 500 ft. gravel bar, 800's all I need,as they fit my Ski's..
Everyone I know on Wagons would vote to include a 182 tailW. We need to ask again ?
My Wagon's for sale, then get booted out of Wagons. I'd buy an older182 with manual flaps, t
None of us want hard feelings, We have enough bigger problems with people taking our rights away.
I'd like a plane like yours, Its too bad you have an ax to grind,
About 850's..I wont land where guide friends operate.
We all know the mission specific machine choices.
A Skywagon fly- in would never Diss an ugly 140 piper that shows up.
in fact its more common everywhere we go to see interest in all planes.
Like Osh. Kick the stuff around sharing stories. Its the people isn't it ?
I was impressed with the red Mooney at CaveMan.. That's a great time.
This looked Rude..and We saw this before on here. sorry I got jumpy..
This is a friendly flying forum , and that's what makes it.
At least I won't get booted from here if I loose the med and don't have a plane.
Happy day all.

Winger, no hard feelings here, I bet if we were neighbors we would be flying together.
I hope you were not forced to sell your Wagon.

I don't know if I arrived at this quandary of dilemma's by choice
or caused by that raft hitting me on the nanananoggon riding the beemer.
Though It is sure to be used as an excuse for my ramblings.

Re: 180/185 fly-in Mcminnville Oregon

Terry,

The club is made up of all types of people and all types of 180/185's. I suspect there is a snooty flyer or two here as well. Regarding your converted 182, you are welcome to join us. The club board voted to allow 182TW's to join back in 2011.

Regarding the two with all the fairings, its just one way to modify the airplane to suit the mission. No one said the 180/185 was specifically designed to be a back country machine. Note the early 180's were Businessliners. Incidentally, that blue one is faster than nearly all Bonanza's out there.

I've been a member for quite a few years. Its simply a group of folks who share a passion for the airplane and like getting together to tell stories. Some of these guys have been in the club for 30 years and know things about these airplanes that most owners don't. Its a wealth of knowledge.

Sidebar, this fly in was the annual convention. Generally these are not back country type fly ins. During the year there are other fly in's in some great spot's around the country that include all types of flying (floats too).

Re: 180/185 fly-in Mcminnville Oregon

Mike, great to have you join the group.

Can you tell us more about the blue 180 that is faster than most bonanza's? 180 with a TN-550 and decreased drag mods?? What prop? What else makes these birds go?

Wish I could of dropped in this weekend and looked at airplanes.

Re: 180/185 fly-in Mcminnville Oregon

The guy that owns that has been around a long time. Its a 53 180 that has had many modifications over the years. This airplane was one of the first to get an IO520 (now has a Lycon IO550D) and 88" MAC 401 Bigfoot. He lives near Wichita and has many connections to Cessna from way back so he has lots of inside information about these airplane. He has many speed mods that are not generally available, likely due to a good relationship with the FSDO folks but who knows. I've mistaken him for a Centurion from afar or even a turbo prop. Lets just say this thing straight and level and play in the red zone all day long. Its quite a machine. I've heard folks say these things get quieter past 160 KIAS but I wouldn't know that in my machine.

This is one of several 180/185's that have been modified to go very fast. A guy named Tommy Rose (RIP) ran a 185 at a Sun n Fun race years ago and won with a 200+mph average if memory serves me right.

Great stories from these guys over the years.
