Re: 180 or 185

I've got the 300 hp 195 and there is a boom mike on the wall and you can talk to each other in the front even on take off!!!! [-X
And it will get there about 10 minutes ahead of the 185 in a 4 hour flight??????
And when you get there you have arrived!!! =D> not just pulled up to the gas pumps to get gas! #-o
Of course theres that 1/2 gallon of oil that you put in after the 4 hour flight and the 10 minutes wiping the oil off the cowl!
But the seats are wide and comfortable, even for a couple that have to have the belt extenders.
And like all big Cessna's if you can get it in there and close the door you have a full load. [-o< As there is only one and it is in the back?? #-o

It's a classic recipe.

Actually, Mongo said he wasn't interested in a Maule

Since when does it matter what the OP specifies!!??

I change my vote to Bellanca Aircruiser.

Interesting looking plane......

Re: 180 or 185

Hmmm, NOW this thread is getting very interesting. =D>
Tits and airplanes....what more could a guy ask for....besides money.
Back to 195's......I have always thought they were one of the sexiest looking airplanes ever made.
Oh crap, this thread isn't about 195's. I regress.

I would like to carry two adults, a child, and a dog into most of the strips in Idaho.

I have to agree with MTV... no where does this say Bonaza / 182.... Tits on the otherhand... we can make some exceptions

I have always prescribed to the "light is right" program, for me that meant getting an early 180 to go with my cub, give me a while and I will let you know how that went. Just yesterday I saw an ad at a small local plane parts shop for a decent sounding helio... 45K cash. Had I not just bought a 180, I would have been having a serious look, I know, I know, it aint a c180 or c185, but it damn sure ain't a Bo....

Take care, Rob

oh and on the 180 note (caution, minor thread hijack here  ) if anyone has a tundra tire worksheet / 337 for 26" goodyears on an early 180 they might share with me I would be amazingly greatfull!
Thanks! Rob

All kidding aside For the money I think a C180 will serve you well with a family your size. Extended baggage is going to be a must! Mine is a 1956 even on a high and hot day (there are limits) I can get off the ground with whatever I can get through the doors. I'm seeing 149mph true a/s @ 8500' and 9500' 20" manifold pressure 2300 rpm nets me about 10.5 gph (I'm using a JPI 450) that's about 14.2 mpg. I just gap sealed my flaps with the Horton set and went from 144mph true a/s to 149mph. I'm Using 7" tires. I spent over 550 hours in a C170B after about 5-10hrs in the C180 I kept asking why I didn't do it sooner. I can't give any info on a C185 I owned a C182 back in the late 80's (1976 model) it had more leg room in the back seat 4" wider in the cabin, same baggage issues little faster 135kts with a 12 gph fuel burn. That should be about 13 mpg.

Re: 180 or 185

I was about 14 minutes and 59 seconds quicker than that...

I've owned two '56 180's, and that's the only airplane I really, truly miss. I've enjoyed flying most all of 'em, but I can get myself damn near tearful sitting here missing my 180. And don't laugh, but the mighty Cessna 207 comes in a close second place.

Re: 180 or 185

Yep, same here.

I now own a 180 hp Cessna 170, and it does everything I need to do. It is a great airplane in its own right.

But I still rue the day I sold my 1966 H model 180. What a great airplane that was. All it needed was an engine overhaul....and at that time, I could have upgraded to the Kenmore O-520 for $16 K. Sold instead.... #-o

Re: 180 or 185

9 years ago I bought the tape from Larry Barlett "So You Want a 195". My wife and I would see him every year for 7 trips to Oshkosh. I was a member of the 195 club. When it came time to buy, I put down the cash and walked away with a Maule. I very much love the 195, but in the end, I didn't want to be the caretaker of a museum piece. I love the maule, "its a Maule thing". I'll be flying my family of 4, 2000 miles in 3 weeks. It's a 4x4 in the sky. A lot of people have an opinion, but talk to someone who owned one.

I still think the 195 is one of the most beautiful aircraft ever built. I would love to have one, but with a Rotorway and Maule I have too many toys!

I wasn't going to post this but with all the rest I couldn't resist. [-X

P.S. 180 and 185 are also great ships, I would be happy to own any aircraft in this thread. =D>

I have always loved the 190/195 for its looks, style, sound and personality. When I was shopping for my 180 all those years ago I could have purchased a 195 for about the same money as what I paid for the 180. I almost did! But in the final analysis the 180 made (and makes) a lot more sense if the plan is to use the airplane as a true "utility" plane (like a pickup truck). Also, just the logistics of housing a 190/195 makes it impractical for me. For instance, I can push the 180 in and out of the hangar by myself with a hand towbar. Couldn't do that with the 195! And there isn't even a good place to have helpers push on the airplane! (No struts!!)

The bottom line is, I think I made the right decision. I bought the 180 15 years ago this past October, and I still get a big smile on my face every time I fly it. In fact, I think I like it even better now than when I first got it! Every time I think about replacing it with something bigger/faster/more efficient or whatever the excuse of the day is, I end up wondering what the heck I'm thinking. I really don't think I could do much better for the same money. The 180's combination of performance, utility and cost is pretty hard to beat.

Note that I didn't mention anything in here about the 182. If I were to apply a very strict practical eye to this I'd probably find that the 182 would do everything for me that the 180 does, and probably do it less expensively due to comparatively lower purchase cost and possibly lower insurance premiums. But I just have to have a taildragger. The crowd I hang around with wouldn't let me hear the end of it if I bought a tri-gear airplane (unless it was a T-28), so the 182 is not in the running for me.

The 180 is THE airplane. (But I am getting the itch to shop for an L-19!! :-$ )
