I have always loved the 190/195 for its looks, style, sound and personality. When I was shopping for my 180 all those years ago I could have purchased a 195 for about the same money as what I paid for the 180. I almost did! But in the final analysis the 180 made (and makes) a lot more sense if the plan is to use the airplane as a true "utility" plane (like a pickup truck). Also, just the logistics of housing a 190/195 makes it impractical for me. For instance, I can push the 180 in and out of the hangar by myself with a hand towbar. Couldn't do that with the 195! And there isn't even a good place to have helpers push on the airplane! (No struts!!)
The bottom line is, I think I made the right decision. I bought the 180 15 years ago this past October, and I still get a big smile on my face every time I fly it. In fact, I think I like it even better now than when I first got it! Every time I think about replacing it with something bigger/faster/more efficient or whatever the excuse of the day is, I end up wondering what the heck I'm thinking. I really don't think I could do much better for the same money. The 180's combination of performance, utility and cost is pretty hard to beat.
Note that I didn't mention anything in here about the 182. If I were to apply a very strict practical eye to this I'd probably find that the 182 would do everything for me that the 180 does, and probably do it less expensively due to comparatively lower purchase cost and possibly lower insurance premiums. But I just have to have a taildragger. The crowd I hang around with wouldn't let me hear the end of it if I bought a tri-gear airplane (unless it was a T-28), so the 182 is not in the running for me.
The 180 is THE airplane. (But I am getting the itch to shop for an L-19!!
