180 Toe In
Have problems with your aircraft? Maybe just questions about how best to tune or adjust something? Regs or maintenance? Need to know the best way to do something?
I have a what I think is excessive toe in on my 180 causing some ground handling issues.
Using the straight edge in front of the tires and a carpenters square off the disc I am showing a 1/4” toe in measured at the gap between the square and the straight edge. From what I have read I believe it should be 0 to 1/16” per side.
Looking for some experienced Cessna guys to chime in.
Thanks!

Are you putting the plane on grease plates when you do that measurement? It needs to be a grease plates to do it properly. Should also be at gross, or close to where you regularly fly it for weight. 1/4" is to much if yoy are doing it on grease plates.

Yes, trying to adjust gear alignment in one of these things is hopeless without grease plates. Cheap and easy to do. Get it on plates, then jockey it around till it settles out, THEN measure.

I agree with MTV my 170 had a lot of excessive Tire wear and it was a little hard to handle on pavement. I use a pair of grease plates and luckily I had enough shims available to get it pretty close.
I was just out on New Year’s Day with the previous owner and he commented that it was behaving very well on the pavement.

Yep, I had it on grease plates. I guess it’s time to get some shims and get to work.
Now can anybody tell what the max toe in should be? Is it 1/16” per side or total?
Thanks!

You want it as close to 0 as possible at your normal operating weight, and max of 1/8", so that would give you 1/16" per side.
