Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

182a right hand exhaust move

I have an A model 182 with a left hand exhaust. I would like to move that to the right side, and have heard there is an "improvement" SB that covers that move. Does anyone know if thats true and happen to have a copy of it?

Re: 182a right hand exhaust move

There was a SB that moved the inlet for the carb heat air, but I don't recall one to flip the exhaust (a la '57 to '58), They did have SNLs where they discussed model year improvements. We did do this on a '57. Carefully cut the hole in the lower cowl and flush patched the old LH hole. I think a more interesting mod would be dual exhaust, which we also did on a '57.

How did you make that flip legal? Field approval? I'm trying to avoid that with a STC or SB

Re: 182a right hand exhaust move

I recall from the "180 model changes" info that the exhaust was changed to the RH side with the 1958 A model,
so that any exhaust staining would be on the belly instead of down the LH side of the airplane.
Is that why you're changing?Just wiping it down after every flight seems a lot easier than changing the exhaust-
esp if it involves much paperwork.

I don't really care about the staining either but my beautiful new acorn flame-coneless muffler specifies a right side install in the stc. I wish I had noticed the fine print before I bought it.

My 56 was changed to the right side over 20 years ago. Is that Urbana Ohio. I bought a 182B in Urbana in 2000.

Do you know how that move was made legal? A 337? That's not really an option anymore unfortunately.

Hard to say for sure without actually reading it, but it sounds like that STC might include approval for moving the exhaust to the RH side.

Re: 182a right hand exhaust move

The Acorn STC approves moving it, if you chose RH exhaust. When I ordered mine I did get the option, I went RH knowing I will be cutting one hole and patching 3 others as it has benefits.

I have not looked but I will bet mine was done with field approval but I bet it can be done as a miner alteration.
