185 Cleveland Brake Conversion

I asked this on the 185 board, but it has rather low participation, so I thought I would throw it out to the larger audience:
So looking at doing a conversion from McCauley. After reviewing the Cleveland literature I notice there are two versions for the 185 and 8.00 wheels, the 199-62 & the 199-62A. The difference being the wheel/disk model the 199-62 uses the 40-75D and the 199-62A uses the 40-75T. Both are for my axel part number, the difference being the disk offset. The other big difference is the -62 kit is $800-$1000 (depending on who you buy it from) cheaper! So who has any experience to share?

The more expensive kit uses the six bolt wheels.
I'll leave the merits of six bolt versus three bolt to someone else.
I run the six bolt wheels on mine.
If you are a fan of hubcaps, the three bolt wheels are the ones you will want.

See the post from 180jocky on page 1 of this thread:

for more details on 3 vs 6 bolt wheels:

I recently talked with a guy at Cleveland Wheel & Brakes tech support. He told me that the load rating on the 3 bolt 40-75D is the same as the load rating on the 6 bolt 40-75T. He then sent me proof. Drawings of both wheels. Their ratings are on each drawing.

Get the 10X10 from AK Bushwheel and run 8.50x10's. Mine came with discs. You will lose no speed compared to 8.50X6. Way better setup. It's only a few more airplane units ($$'s).

Get 'em will ya. You can thank me later. :D

Although I cannot address the good/bad/cheap/expensive aspects of the Cleveland products, I humbly suggest that you call Grove Aircraft down at Gillespie Field in San Diego. If he has a conversion kit approved for your 185, you will not be disappointed in the quality, performance, or price.

Re: 185 Cleveland Brake Conversion

I appreciate the wealth of info ration put out here. I am mainly looking to replace my McCauley brakes due to parts un-availability. I just run 8.50 which work fine for me and have for years, even when I flew in the jungles of Central America. The only other caveat I have is a desire to try wheel skis. I am looking to get a set of simple wheel penetration skis to mess around this winter. So any thoughts that way would be helpful as well.

Ahh. That makes sense. Landis Airglas seems to be the norm for good, not too spendy penetration skis. I don't have anything for you there, never wanted to shovel snow for fun.
