185 Motocraft alternator, same as 206’s and the 550 mount?

Need an alternator and mount for a 1973 A185F, the motocraft came out with a cracked mount. Trouble is my local maintenance shop just sold their last one 3 days ago, and I’m AOG.

Found a 206 one used, from a 550. Anyone able to say off the top of their head if this is the same mount?

To me that looks like just an alternator, not a mount.

Do you know if they’re talking about the aluminum part or the rubber isolators (sometimes called mounts)

I have a spare set of the rubber isolators brand new for my 185.

Yea it’s the aluminum mounting horn on mine cracked, it’s part of the alternator body so my core is toast. Just not sure if the 550 uses the same alternator mounting bolt positions / same part number. Sure looks like it, bugging my engineer too but haven’t heard back.

It uses the same. When you upgrade from a 520 to a 550 you usually keep the same alternator.

The Ford alternator housing is the same as the Ford cars and trucks from mid 70 to 80s. The internal parts for aircraft are different but housing is the same. Napa has new alternator and your parts fit in easily. My alternator on my 180k 77 12 volts is original most problems I find with them is brushes . Last set I bought was 2$.

Or purchase a new plane power alternator. Owned by Hartzell, available through Boeing parts (was Aviall).

Not everyone likes Hartzell, but I’m pleased with mine. My original PlanePower unit failed, and Hartzell replaced it. 5 yr. warranty.

It’s a bit lighter. I also believe it produces more stable power when paired with the plane power regulator. That was important for me when I upgraded Avionics.

Cub180 & Pinecone that knowledge is invaluable, I sincerely appreciate it.

I bought the used one, price was fair, knowing I could make one working one out of the two. Appears I’ll be able to build a spare, too, thanks guys. My alternator worked fine, but had a cracked mount.

I'd never do this, but I know a guy who was coming home from the east coast and the alternator shit the bed in his 185. He took the courtesy car to the local Advanced Aviation Parts and got an alternator for the same year F150, installed it, and flew home. The crazy SOB even had to do 2 at least one RNAV approach to minimums somewhere in middle america to get home.
