2 Turbo 400 Trannies in 182

Hey guys

Im helping a buddy who is racing Ultra 4 down at the King of the Hammers. He needs desperately to get 2 transmissions back from Sacramento down to Firebaugh. The shop is located right next to Mather. I pulled out my back seat and carpet and laid down a shipping blanket and have some cardboard as well, we are planning on putting them in trash bags to prevent leaking. I have some tie down rings in the baggage.

Anyone done anything like this with a 182? Looks like should be smooth sailing and a very easy fit with the seats out.

I was expecting pics of another type of tranny?

If you meet WB, I cant see why it would be an issue other than it moving or possible strong fumes from fluids in the tranny. If it smells strong out in the open, it will be much worse in a confined space with 2.

Good luck,

Unless the trannies weigh more than 5 skydivers should be ok . Tie them down real good. Wouldn't really worry about the smell if they are in bags . I bet 5 skydivers smells way worse .

I removed the back seat in my 172 and installed some tie down rings that I robbed from the back of my wifes SUV. I just bolted them in place of the seat mounts and it worked great. Just used a couple of ratchet tie down straps and off to the races. I loaded up a bunch of electrical panels and gas burners and believe me they weighed more that a couple of 400 transmissions. Just keep the load focused where the back passengers would sit, close to the back of the front seat.

If you have a couple of old slip yokes hanging around you might want to slide them into the output of the trannies. If it is going to leak anywhere that would be it. dipstick is easy to plug and input shaft is usually high enough not to be a problem.

nothing worse than spilled tranny fluid......well almost nothing :D

Im not super concerned about them leaking a ton, they are fresh rebuilds...but i do know they use a little oil in them when rebuilding.

Thanks for the input!

Don't worry about them leaking!
It will help keep corrosion down!

What's the distance /time en route ? Keep the weight as far forward as possible -maybe take out front r/h seat as well as back seat. Secure load to keep from moving .Taking off R/F door will make loading-unloading a snap with lots of hands.

We used to haul outboard engines off our houseboat at lake Powell in the back of our 182 to bring them home for maintenance. I would think transmissions should be no problem.

Well i made the flight today, it was really routine really... only ended up being one transmission up and one home. We brought a few torque converters and a few oil coolers and trans coolers home with us. Well within the payload of the plane. Here is a picture of the transmission loaded up with the coolers and torque converters. I secured the tranny with the standard D rings that the 182 has in it already, plane flew like a dream like i had someone in the back seat.

Thanks for the input guys, i really appreciate it.
