2006 BCP Summer Fly-in, Johnson Creek, ID: The Details

July 15-16 Johnson Creek, ID (3U2)

OK, this is the new thread for details about the fly-in. The old thread was mainly for deciding upon a good date for everyone, but this thread should be a place for people to tell Strata how many burgers they can eat, etc. ;)

- A group dinner is planned for saturday night. Time TBA, but if you see a bunch of drooling guys loitering in one area holding paper plates, beeline for them.

-I'll come bearing some t-shirts for sale. If I can't make it, I'll send em on with Jr.

-This is not your standard fly-in, or at least as I understand it since it will be my first time there. No flour drops, but maybe some sorties in the morning, and whole lot of good BS time and tire kickin with like minded people. Damn I hope my airplane and I are ready for it.

-Read this thread too for some good info about flying into 3U2.

-Here is a list of members that have anted up. I will edit this periodically to add/remove. Private Message me if you want it to be known that you're showing up!

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Now we're cookin'. Just need to get a couple of folks to volunteer to buy some chips some chips and dessert. We'll probably have a community ice chest available for beverages.

Zane, your annual can't be worse than mine is. Are you doing it now or do you have it scheduled for next month?

The excuses and annual whining thread got split so this one can focus on JC stuff. :D

Well I've got my leave in for that time frame. Hopefully I'll be proficient enough by then in my Avid to fly it in from McCall but if not I've got access to a 180hp 172N. Looking forward to it!!

I am planning on getting to the JC flyin on my way to class with Lori Mac Nichols which starts the following week and would be happy to bring something for the group. How many do you expect to show up? Gary

Bring cash to buy ice cream off of the Schwan's truck.

One of the guys at the Idaho Backcountry fly-in last year bought several boxes of ice cream bars from the Schwan's truck and walked down the tiedowns handing them out. Can't describe how good it was to lay in the grass under the wing (nursing a hangover from the previous night) and eating an ice cream bar in the summer sun with good friends.

If the Schwan's truck isn't around we'll pick something up at McCall and keep it in the freezer at the airport...

That sounds like a date to me, just got back from the 180/185 fly-in at Garden Valley and am itching to get back up there. Hopefully the bridge at JC will check out and be operational by then. right now it is closed due to some very high water settling the foundations.

If my co-pilot can get off work we're planning to go to Arlington and then JC. If he can't we'll see y'all at JC. Are we having a group dinner or is it every man for himself?

I say we do a group dinner. Good way to get everyone in the same place at the same time. I'd like to bring something lightweight. I would bring the beer, but my airplane just lacks the utility to transport such a dense payload in the quantities we'll require.

Suggestions for dinner? Burgers? Dogs? Brats? A pot of chili? Potato salad? Should i build an ice machine like in the Mosquito Coast so we can make some ice cream?

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

This looks like the Saturday dinner menu so far:

I'm gonna take a head count on Saturday morning and fly over to McCall to purchase hamburger meat, buns, and cheese for burgers. I'll also volunteer to pick up any supplies that others need on that trip.

John is supplying chile beans

Jr. is bringing veggies and stuff (what's stuff?).

Sounds like MM is bringing dessert and a stripper.

Zane will be bringing chips and dip (they're light weight).

If someone wants to supply some brats or dogs and sauerkraut that would work too.

Need one more volunteer to buy or bring a salad of some sort, maybe another or two to bring condiments and/or paper plates, napkins and plastic utensils.

We can pick a lot of this stuff up at Raley's on Saturday morning so we don't over or underbuy.

Anybody else wanting to toss something in can help with beverages. I suggest we get beverages and incidentals at the Yellowpine General Store as a nod to the local economy. Ice is also available at the Yellowpine Store by the five gallon bucket, and we might be able to get Kif and Dawn to loan us an ice chest for beverages (not completely sure about that since they had to come out to the airport to retrieve it the last time I borrowed it).

How's that sound?

I talked to Cody at the airport yesterday. The courtesy cars are currently trapped on the airport property, but foot traffic is allowed across the bridge and Cody and Genes cars are out by the road. They've offered to take a couple lof us to town if the need arises. There used to be a 'taxi service' in Yellowpine available from the courtesy phone under the Ramada but the current status of that is unknown.

Bridge repair appears to be iffy at this time and may not happen till lower waters in the creek late in the summer...bummer, but not a deal breaker.

The one big unknown is the availability of firewood. A friend of mine bought a bunch for the airport last August but it's doubtful that much is left. Might want to see if we can get a bit saved for us for cooking and a group fire. I'll check into it. There's a lot of dead wood around the airport (too much for comfort), but I think there are rules about cutting it and someone may need to bring a chainsaw if we can get permission to cut some.

Leave it to a 185 driver to stuff a keg into the plane...are you sure it will last the week?

Food for JC

I'll be happy to bring brats and I would be happy to supply some margaritas. Would like to have some idea of how many are going. Guess the easiest way may be to start a thread of who's going and how many are they bringing Gary

The truth will set you on the path to being free

Scwhan's Ice Cream Truck??????

Courtesy cars????????

I thought the title of this group was "Backcountry Pilot". Maybe this should be changed to "Semi-Urban Country Pilot"??

Sorry, couldn't resist--I know, I know---it's the density altitude, right?

You left out the hot shower's and the webcam, smart aleck. :)

Have you ever flown in Idaho, Mike? I don't recall you ever writing about it, but know that you've been to a heck of a lot of places.

It's the fly-out potential you know, so many cool little strips in close proximity to each other...

Strata,

Nope, never flown up in that part of ID. Have flown a bit in SE ID, but never up there.

Just teasing--having "camped out" in some really crappy places, in some rather ugly weather conditions, showers and an ice cream truck sound like great camping accompaniments to me.

I hope to get into that part of Idaho sometime this summer, weather, home projects and Gina willing,

Yeah, I knew you were teasing us, Mike.

Sounds like you won't make it to this fly-in, but do try to get to the Idaho Backcountry Fly-in if you can on Aug. 18-20, you'll have a good time for sure.

I spoke with Gene at the airport this morning and he informed me that the firewood situation is good. The state was able to get a truckload of wood in before the bridge was damaged by the flood waters this spring and there was also some wood left over from last season. As long as people use it responsibly there should be enough firewood to last most of the summer.

A couple of people in Yellowpine have volunteered to take pilots into town (probably for a modest fee) if it's needed.
