Re: 2010 Winners and losers

Did we forget Aviat's Husky? I'm betting they sold more than Mooney's 2.

BTW, Mooney, which has had a tumultuous decade or two, has shed most of it's employees. They say they are keeping a skeleton crew to provide parts to the fleet.

Sad, Mooney has been one of my favorite airplanes since I was old enough to want one. I'd drive my beat car down old airport road (Oakland CA) shining my spotlight on them. They looked fast even when parked, and I knew I could never afford one . . .

Wow!
Truly amazing, and truly sad. How does a company stay in business with units sold in the double (let alone single) digits?

Rob,

I just heard yesterday that Leland Snow passed away on Sunday. It'll be interesting to see what becomes of Air Tractor.

Well since it was handed over to the employees a few years back, I bet it will continue on but never will it be the same.

What about Beechcraft? I was tuning up and flying an A-36 a couple of days ago and it sure was nice.

1st time!!!!
More piston homebuilts than OEM?
February 24, 2011 — This week, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) released its annual Statistical Databook, with the new edition covering the 2010 calendar year. Included in the comprehensive edition are factory-built aircraft shipment totals. The worldwide aircraft shipments included 2,015 total aircraft, including 889 piston-powered aircraft, 763 business jets, and 363 turboprops. Total shipments declined 11.4 percent because of the struggling economy.

Interestingly, homebuilt aircraft registrations continued their growth in the U.S. last year. A total of 941 homebuilt aircraft were added to the FAA registry in 2010, an increase of 10 percent from the previous year. There are now more than 32,000 homebuilt aircraft registered in the U.S.

HBC sold 51 Bo's, 29 Barons and 91 King Air's. That's 5 less Bo's and 9 more Barons than last year.
