2013 Caveman Ranch Luau - Trip Report / Photo Thread

Wow, what a great fly-in!

I'm at a loss for words at the amazing amount of work Rod, Paula, Hunter, Gary, and many others put in to make this years Caveman Fly-in one of the best backcountry fly-ins in the nation (if not the best fly-in period). These fine folks deserve a BIG thank you from our BCP community. =D> =D> =D>

It was great to see everyone, endless amounts of memories over the last few days. I hope everyone made the flight home safe.

If you want to share your trip report or pictures of the weekend, please post it here. :) I'll post more soon.

Really was a fun time. My son really enjoyed getting to debone the pigs while fresh from the pit.

Just wish we could of stayed a little longer.

X2 on the thanks to Rod Paula Hunter and Gary. Also thanks to every one that organized the four bombing and landing competition made for a fun afternoon.

I just wish they would straighten out that huge dog leg in the runway :)

"Wow" is a good description.... Just got back from a great trip at Caveman. Luckily the winds calmed down and the weather cooperated to make this a fun weekend. I was blown away at the length Rod, Paula, and Hunter went to make this a memorable fly-in. Thinking back on the pig roast still makes me hungry. Also a big thanks to Gary for organizing the event, Del for the flour drop/shortfield contest, and to Ladd for the BBQ dinner on Friday night.

It was nice meeting new people and enjoyed talking with everyone. Here were a couple pictures from the event...

Great time at Caveman!! Looks like the count was somewhere around 65 airplanes over the course of 3 days. Thanks to Rod,Paula,Hunter,Gary, Del, and Tom the bee keeper for running up and down the runway measuring for the short field landing distances and eating lots of dirt!!!

That was Awesome!! Thanks again Rod, Paula, Hunter and Johnny. Also Shortfielder and Del for organizing. Many thanks for all that donated for the raffle, that was a very special treat. I wonder how Teresa's tandem skydive went? BTW, I have eaten dirt all over the country, that Colorado river bottom stuff is especially fine!

Well I would say overall it was an amazing time. The company was great, the food was great and the flying, other than the turbulence was amazing. The views in that area are breathtaking to say the least. Janelle and I headed out Thursday morning and finally arrived around 2 after a stop for lunch in Richfield. The turbulence was about an 8/10 for bad! The first leg at 17500 was great, the second I couldn't get above 13,000ft due to the updrafts/downdrafts. It was brutal! But that night instead of eating our cold cut sandwiches we got treated to an awesome BBQ chicken dinner! Friday Rob(56) and I headed out to play in the morning and hit up a few strips with Little John and Laura-Lee. It was at least less turbulent than the day before. After a little flying we headed to Arches national park for some hiking followed by a good dinner and coffee in town, and as some know underpants for someone that forgot them! Thankfully Moab is stocked pretty well with anything you need, that also included a patch kit for our air mattress. Saturday was another great day and we hit up Mineral Canyon, Angels Point and then headed over to Rockland ranch for a tour. What an amazing group of people. Very friendly and open to giving tours. The runway was in great condition too, parking could have gone better! After some great fun sat afternoon it was a great dinner and after party! This morning was great, when it came to smooth air, headwinds where another story! But we got home about 1045 PST just in time for lunch. It was an amazing time and I can't wait till the next fly in....JC-2013!!

It went great! Happened about 9ish...before I left at 9:30. She loved it, you could hear her joyful cheers all the way down. I think she's hooked.

Did the 9hr drive home, just showered and gonna go play with the kids...will post photos later of the absolutely fantastic time I had. I'll say it too, thanks Rod, Paula, Hunter, Gary, Ladd, Del, Tom, Bird, and all the other folks that hopped in and helped out to make this one helluva fly (drive)-in!

Nice pics

I love that Mooney. Stone say's it was his favorite plane. Watching the low pass down the runway with the gear, looks like a fighter coming in to strafe =D>

Great weekend! Thanks, Rod, Paula, Hunter, Gary, Del, and Ladd! Great time, again.

I made it home to Boulder door-to-door from Caveman in 3.5hrs with 2 fuel stops. Not often does a J3C see 100mph ground speed while at Vy of 60mph at 13,700ft. ;-)

I thought my sinus cavities were going to explode slipping down 7000ft in under 10 minutes.

Can't say enough good things about everyone who put on this fly-in, and all the hard work they did to make it happen. =D> Great to see old friends and make new ones, and I really appreciate Rod, Paula, Hunter, Gary, Del, Ladd, and others going above and beyond to provide us with such a special experience.

I was also very impressed with the pilot skills on display. Some of you guys are doing things in 170s and 180s that the rest of us wouldn't be able to do in a hot rod Super Cub, and Pops and Blu are doing things in Super Cubs that shouldn't even be possible. Fun to get to watch those kinds of skills up close!

Here are a few of my favorites from the trip:
