If I'm not mistaken, the winds aloft provided are forecast winds, not actual. One could get FD's the old-fashioned way and maybe get an update from Flightwatch while enroute...no big advantage 496.
Private airports and XM weather might be the incentive for me to upgrade from my 296, though.

I pulled up the XM Weather info, and it looks like with the higher priced subscription you get a limited amount of weather services for Canada and Puerto Rico. Nothing showing for Alaska.
