4 lost in Wendover Crash today

Sounds like high winds might have been a factor. I know this morning they were forecasting winds to 50 and it is always windy out in the desert between PVU & Wendover. RIP

Channel 4 says the plane is registered in Portland and there was 4 on board. This is always a terrible thing but I hope it is not any of our group or their friends.

Anytime I ever had 4 persons in a 172 and needed fuel, my cg was a little aft for gusty landings. Prayers for the families.

Excellent article on KSLTV regarding this very tragic incident: http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=15801502
Very good comments, especially by RJM and subsequently regarding 172 cg and weight limitations. :(

May they rest in peace, and their family, friends, and associates be consoled in their afflictions.

I guess my brother knew one of the guys. The comments on the article says it all. In my flight class they stressed that accidents are usually the result of a series of events. Looks like this is the case here. Sad to see this happen. Let's all be careful, tail winds to these guys.

Re: 4 lost in Wendover Crash today

Quote from the NTSB Accident report, looks like if he had of turned left into the wind instead or right they would have had faired better. Wind shear?

"Initial information from Air Traffic Control (ATC) was that the pilot requested navigational assistance, and was directed to the Wendover Airport. A witness who was working on the air field stated that he heard the pilot say over the radio that his intentions were to land and get fuel. Multiple witnesses stated that the winds were very strong from the south, and that they observed the airplane attempt to land on runway 26. The airplane bounced a couple of times and had difficulty staying aligned with the runway. It proceeded to become airborne again, and crabbed into the wind as it gained altitude, climbing to between 150-200 feet. The airplane then turned to the north, the nose pitched down, and descended vertically to the ground.

The Wendover airport weather observation system (AWOS) recorded at 1435, winds from 180 degrees at 24 knots gusting to 28; 10 statute miles visibility; and sky was clear of clouds. Runway 12/30 at Wendover was closed for construction".

Down wind turn......
With some guys and their airplanes-they swear it doesn't matter,
but I don't seem to be able to train mine that well, either....

Always turn into the wind.....
lc

PS NOT to draw conclusions about the accident, but conditions as described-it sounds like possibly a factor.
