That is my home airport and the cafe is a great place to hang out on the weekends. Tons of planes taxing right up to the cafe.... On a number of occassions there has been great apperances of c170, 180, and an awesome white and brown trim 185.

Flying is dangerous. If you think otherwise, you are new at this sport. Mind the gravity not the gap.

Hey Rob,
Your pictures are bringing back a bunch of great memories. Idyllwild has some really good mountain biking, some of the best in socal in my opinion.
Is the glider operation still going on at Hemet? I worked on my Glider rating at Hemet when I was in dental school, can't remember the guys name that had the outfit, but he was the real deal and a nice guy.

Went through Big Bear a couple weeks ago in the Bonanza. Good food at the airport cafe and pretty cheap fuel. Could also check out that dirt strip in Arrowhead.

Go get an aerobatic ride at Redlands (REI) in the Pitts S2A. Great guy.

Anyway, just a few things I would do if I was bumming around down there, lol.

Hi Brent, thanks for the advise. That's how I found out about Hemet was from iceman. The best tips come from friends. Big Bear is way cool. Arrow Head looks fun but not $20.00 to land fun. When I have my street bike down here we like to go to Idyllwild, good twisties. I am having more fun than I deserve!

Cheers...Rob

I forgot you rode street bikes, and yes, Idyllwild has some great twisties, up and down both sides. Also, Hwy 38 and 18 up to Big Bear.

A few years back the county shut the operation down saying the parallel runways were to close or something along those lines (pun). I think just a couple months ago the FAA ruled that the country was wrong in their decision but there hasn't been any action out there since. It's ashame as it was a popular spot for gliders. Away from major airspace, great thermals, and plenty of ridges to soar on.

Dang it Oregon Maule, you should have dropped by Whiteman Airport when you were in SoCal and had lunch with us. We've got a few retired firefighters here with airplanes, andLA county FD heli operations base is here, with the only civilian Blackhawk helicopters in the world. Now I'm offended :(

Hey Bill, I didn't remember you flying out of Whiteman. I was hoping to get over that way to see Dave, Butch and Rich too. The wx wins again.

I'm loving my EZ flap handle by the way.

Re: 5/16/11 Hemet, Ca. Lunch

Thanks. I'll be hopefully working with the Maule factory as an OEM option or std. equip. Make another trip down here sometime again and stop by WHP. We have a couple of BCP Maule drivers here (although N131CP has still not taken me up on my repetitive offer to help him hacksaw off that nosewheel).

One of our "airport mayors" Tim Quinn was a fire captain, he's someone I'd like to introduce to you. Lots of interesting characters here. The restaurant's not even that awful :)
