5/16/2008 - Fly-In to Owyhee, Owyhee Reservoir (28U), OR

May 16, 17, 18th I'm planning a trip to Owyhee, weather permitting.
Anyone else is welcome.

Friday, I'll fly out to Burns and re-fuel. Perhaps get a chance to meet Skylane.

If its not too hot, I'll continue on to Owyhee, otherwise, I'll have to find something else to do or someplace else to fly then head to Owyhee the next morning. The Alvord is a possibility if fuel can be found nearby. I'm open for alternate suggestions.

I would like to come and show off my new 182B. I think that I will do this instead. Not too many chances to here this guy. phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2257

Also I probably want to put on the big wheel up front prior to that sort of thing.

I am supposed to be in Gresham on the 17th for a dinner. Something to do with the flight I took Francis Hoopes on. I will be down to the Owyhee if I can get out of this meeting. Bob

Haven't fished there myself. According to "Flyer's Recreation Guide - NW" by Reed White, "The reservoir teams with crappies, and the river supports small populations of catfish, suckers, and carp."

Let's see, publish date is 1997. Don't know if fish and wildlife has bothered stocking it with trout by now but I wouldn't count on it.

From the Oregon Department of Aviation website:

While fishing in the lake is very good at times, use caution in eating any fish you catch. Because of naturally occurring mercury in the water, pregnant or nursing women and children 6 years old or younger should not eat any fish taken here. Children older than 6 and healthy adults should eat no more than 8 ounces of fish from these waters, at a frequency of no more than 6 times a year. (Catch and release sounds like a good idea.)

That's pretty much true anywhere. When I lived in Bellingham WA, regular warnings were released regarding the fish in the Whatcom lake.
I used to think it was from the local GP mill but it sounds like most of it is coming over from all the coal plants in China now.

I'm sad to hear that it extends as far east as Owyhee. Maybe it's other sources. Hard to say. Are there no clean lakes anymore?

My understanding is that the mercury in Owyhee Reservoir is naturally occurring in the surrounding soil, and probably being concentrated due to the river being dammed.

Mercury

There were, years ago a few Mercury mines around here. 1997 I was going to use mine tailings for a road project. Had an Industrial Hygenist come in a test the soil. Was to contaminated to use.

So catch and release would be a good bet. There are some higher lakes that produce good trout, as does the Blitzen river.

If you come by Burns by all means look me up. If the weather works I may fly out Saturday just for the thrill of it.

The weather could hardly be better, except it's going to be a scortcher. Bring shorts and plenty of sunscreen. Watch that density altitude.

Planning to leave Friday morning.

Well....

:P :D

Well had a good time visiting with Firefighter Rob, and checked out his Maule. Nice Bird \:D/ I'd have one anyday. Went to mexican for dinner, "El Toreo" best in town! #-o Actually the only one in town.

Then Friday, had a fly by from Savannah Tom. Talk about stealth :-$ . Tom was over the shop at work when I spotted him at about 700 agl, I think. Could barely hear it running. A wave from me and a circle and waggle of the wings and he was off to BNO for fuel.

Then got a call from Groundlooper, "Craig". Swung by the airport on my way from work and bs'ed with him for a while. Nice 150 he is flying. He was waiting for things to cool down temp wise, wise pilot! Then I gave him a tour of the 182. Which doesn't take long. :P

Went out that same evening and put the trickle charger on the 182. According to Gill, one should trickle charge the battery every 90 days for maint. It's about a year since I've done that.

So Saturday morning John "Avid flyer type guy", next door neighbor and friend and I hopped in the 182 and took some pictures for my daughters senior project. Then flew out and did a low pass at Owyhee. Would have landed, however I'm a bit rusty, and just didn't want to give it a try. Then flew around the desert looking at water holes, searching for game and just generally burning up $4.98 a gallon av gas. 8)

Besides I had to be back by 11 to help my son get his 67 Bronco to a 4x4 show and shine. He only has his learners permit, so he needed a co pilot.

All in all a good weekend for me. 8) =D>

It was great to get a chance to meet Bub. If I was in the market for a 182, I'd definitely give his serious consideration.

Finally departed at 6:30. It was still 85 at burns but the sun was getting low and I knew it would cool off by the time I got to Owyhee. Not a bad landing but I need to get on the brakes a bit sooner as I used most of the 1800 feet.

Saw you fly over on Saturday. One of the other pilots has a straight tail 172 with the same colors. At first we thought it was him. Took me a while before I realized with the droop tips and barely visible numbers, it was Bub.

Watched some guy in a kitfox like aircraft. I don't recall exactly what it was. He was landing on one of the hillsides Sunday morning before popping down to the Owyhee. He said he had about 200 feet. His last departure he wasn't quite flying by the time he went over the edge and did an obvious nose down. He had 21" wheels and said it was pretty rough. It was very interesting to watch.

Head winds both ways!
