6/14/2008 - Rexburg Airshow, Rexburg, ID (KRXE)

Just wanted to let the group know that the Rexburg Airshow is scheduled for June 14 beginning at 9:00am. I have been the last 3 or 4 years and I always have a great time. My uncle runs Rexburg Air Service. Last year the Jelly Belly T-Craft entertained my kids better than icecream. Always a few P-51's, Sea Fury's and other cool warbirds. Usually 5 Husky's or more. Great airshow for a small town and seems to be centralized for many of us.

I showed up last year on Friday night around 7:30p and there was an impromtu airshow in progress. I heard all kinds of cowboys talking on the radio about 20 min. out and couldn't for the life of me figure out what they were doing based on their radio talk. I'm based at KSLC and its all business all the time and these guys were like "I'm on yer tail comin 'round for another slice, ya got me". There were 3 mustangs doing low fly-by's for a small crowd.

I announced that I was 5 miles from the airport inbound to land and could they make room for a Cherokee in the pattern. Suddenly the radio went silent for 10 seconds or more and one guy finally said " Alright, but can you stay at 7,000 for a minute we're just now havin fun".....Rexburg!

I felt like I was raining on their parade but I got in and enjoyed the show.

Anyhows, great times for all, bring chairs and hope to see a few of you there.

You can edit the original post to change the thread title.

Also, read the sticky in Events and Fly-ins for the format if you want it to appear on the homepage. Any reason you posted this to the Types forum?

It's a topic that "sticks" to the top of the list, that's what the f*ck it is. :)

That certainly clears things up. I don't have a "sticky" button on my Commodore 64. I'll push one of the other buttons and see what happens.

I attended Rexburg's show a couple of years ago when Greg Poe performed. That was KOOL !!!! Maybe I will fly the beast over for the day. I do,, well did belong the the Idaho chapter 407 of the EAA. They do encompass the area of Rexburg but for some reason don't even mention the airshow. Must be a different tribe of LDS followers and their is bad blood between them....

I went last year and it was a good time. I plan on flying up in the Luscombe again this year if things work out.

Rexburg Air Service is where I go for my annuals, Craig is a good guy. He just gave my plane its annual last weekend and said he was worried about one of the cylinders...it dropped from 78 to 77 :D

Craig is the bomb! Very knowledgeable and absolutely zero ego.

A story from the 2006 Airshow still cracks me up every time I think about it.

3 of us left early from Provo in a T210 and decided to sightsee in some canyons on the way up. We knew the airport was closing at 9am so we cut it close and had a ball. About 8:45am we were 5 miles out when this old coot gets on the unicom and says "attention everyone, the airport is now closed" WHAT! We hear this guy in a Mooney say " You have a 9am closure by way of Federal NOTAM and I expect you to honor that!, I'm entering the pattern!" The old coot says " Well we're ready to start. We're closing it right now ".

We come screaming down and enter the pattern only to find a pickup truck driving down the center of the runway away from us. Three teenagers in the back see this 210 closing in and they say something to the driver and he pulls off, letting us land behind the Mooney. We see a Pacer in the pattern and the old codger tells him runway is closed and he (Pacer) decides to boogy and fly away.

We taxi to the far end and shut down just as a Skydiving C180 roars down the runway and heads out south to gain altitude for his drop. We are a little peeved about the whole thing but, hey, we got in, got front row seats and the show begins at 9am sharp.

Just as the C180 releases hi jumpers, about 9:15 I see this J3 Cub in the pattern and proceeds to land and comes taxiing up next to us. I jump up to help him pull the plane onto the grass. We get situated and I start talking to the pilot, who still had his young son in the front seat. " Can you believe that old geezer closing the runway early and the Mooney guy chastising him, he (geezer) prolly doesn't even know what a NOTAM is, and that dude in the Pacer just split, poor guy...can you believe that??"

"Uh....I didn't catch any of that....uh....I dont even have a radio..I wear ear plugs"

Fair enough.

I laughed but it soon dawned on me why they came up with the saying " Ignorance is Bliss ". It truly is.

I have a similar story from the 2005 airshow. My Pops wasn't real good about checking notams and such...I have since helped him realize the importance...but he was flying back from Salmon and wanted to stop in REX for fuel. Part of the show is the warbirds doing several low passes along the runway. Well, my old man follows standard procedure, observes the traffic and enters the pattern on a 45 to downwind. He landed and parked the plane then got swarmed by people who thought he was part of the show. I thought it was pretty funny, and I did use the opportunity to show the importance of checking notams. He pretty good at checking them now. He's just lucky he didn't get busted.

4th Annual Airshow

KRXE Rexburg-Madison County Airport Rexburg, Idaho, USA
9:00 AM - 1:00 PM
This year we will again be pleased to enjoy the fantastic flying ability of Kent Pietsch and his incredible dead stick landing, and by landing his 1942 Interstate Cadet aircraft, "Jelly Belly", on a moving pickup truck. This year promises to outdo last year.

The B-25 was the bomber used in the April 1942 Doolittle Raid, in which 16 B-25s, led by the legendary Lt. Col. Also flying at our air show will be a Douglas C-47 Dakota, the famous Douglas DC-3 airliner, P-51 Mustang,T-6 Texan, The Beechcraft Stagger Wing, P-63 King Cobra, the Howard DGA; and the L-39 Albatross jet

99.9% chance of me being able make the show this weekend.. Weather looks promising too... Is there any place to park the "beast"in an area where I can display it?

Ben

PS. I haven't seen the gray 550 lately but 94 was in today.. Ya fly that one too?

I'm trying to get a hold of Craig and I can't reach him. I would think there would be plenty of room for you and a million questions about the beast. I'm now hoping to make it myself. looks good but I have to bring along a 2 yr old...not sure how that will work.

I dont fly 94LA, wish'd I did. I fly on the Gulfstream as a Flight engineer/ Mechanic whenever the plane leaves the country, which is a lot lately.

Returned home from Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong Sunday.

Back from KRXE...decent airshow, about 7 portapotties for 15,000 people, YUCK !!!
A little disorganized and the show lost continuity a few times but all in all great weather, other then the 30+ headwind I had going to the show. Made that back on the return trip home. My toy flies great at 14,500 too. The high point of the show was the Jelly Belly act. God as my witness but I have not seen it before and for about a minute or so after the guy lost his right aileron I thought I was viewing a bad situation. He flew it like a distressed plane should but after his first chance at landing it safely and he kept going on I then figured this was a stunt. Then one wheel fell off. :o
Great act for sure. After I got home I did google him and there is a youtube video of this same thing. I would post the link but I forgets how to link it here. All in all another good day. of course anytime I can roll the beast back into its hangar in one piece is a great day, :D :D :o

I enjoyed the airshow as well. Nice weather, cool planes, lots to drink and no bathrooms!! Ben I was looking for you but I didn't see anyone hovering around the General Lee. I got there a little late thanks to Idaho's finest refusing to allow the 16 mile long line of cars on hwy 26 exit and turn into the airshow.

We had a good time, kids and I loved Jelly Belly and the B-25. We tried to go eat at 12:00 noon and get back to the show in time to rap with the fly-in pilots but Idaho's finest again blocked all cars from returning to the Airshow, so we made it back around 2pm and everyone was gone. I wanted to at least hear the sound of that thing and was denied!!

I flew home sideways with a 25 knot head/crosswind but it was a pretty day. Kids fell asleep, XM radio, what more could I ask for??
