That plane is hanging from the ceiling in the Las Vegas airport terminal...

I used to think of that story often while on XC in my 170. Made me feel better.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”
I'd like to understand this part -Through-firewall plumbing was installed so that the engine oil and oil filters could be changed without shutting off the engine??

Before I read the story I was thinking that's how long Las Vegas Approach vectored these guys around Class B airspace. That's one hell-of-a flight. Wonder why they didn't just fly it to TBO that's just another 19 days

Then they flew over to California and threw it out.

That's why there's so much garbage along most California highways.

Taking a dump in the aiplane ( not cool)..what amazes me is that they could Change the oil in flight? Id imagine that the EPA and environment was not all that important back then, must have chucked that old oil overboard. I am really suspicious of this record. I mean really? This is the Backcountry Pilots community. Who's to say that they didnt just land in the desert for a few hours or few days?

Taking a dump in the aiplane ( not cool).
Lownslow, I was "picturing" a butt naked guy wearing goggles, sitting outside the plane on a board with an outhouse hole cut in it. Bombs away!

The article said "Timm removed his clothes and stepped out onto the platform for a refreshing sponge bath". Probably used the platform for bombing runs too. Must have been a Full Moon.

From what I understand, they landed when the engine had deteriorated to the point that they had trouble climbing away from the refuel truck.
