8/10/07 - Missouri River Breaks Flyin - 9S7

Below is the announcement for the Breaks Flyin out of 9S7...

OK guys here is the schedule .... WX dependent.

Friday Night; 10 August: Camp at Cow Creek airstrip in the breaks. (2400 ft...E - W in good shape... (N47 56.85 W 109 00.54) see photos from M Vivion article in Pilot Getaways). We will cook beef, and salad....BYO Beverages. We'll haul it out there along with paper plates and napkins/setups.. $7 for the feed. ...no reasonable person would have a fire in the breaks right now.

Saturday Morning; 11 August: Fly to other back-country strips/explore Missouri Breaks country...look for elk and world-class bighorn sheep.

Saturday Afternoon; 11 August: Return to Winifred...open flyouts .... Hamburger feed in hangar that evening. ca. $10/plate with kegged beverage.

Sunday Morning; 12 August: Short field/spotlanding contests. We can jackpot if there is interest otherwise, strictly ego gratification.

Winifred ( 9S7 ... CTAF 122.9) is a town of ca. 140 august souls in the middle of some of the wildest country left in N. America. Our strip is 2400 ft. of sod. Camping is under the wing of your aircraft or 200 yards away under the trees in the city park. The new hangar is complete and the pilot's lounge is available... we can put up ca. 9 planes and have tie-downs for several more if necessary. Otherwise....bring tie-downs. 100LL will be available. Showers will be in the swimming pool which the town will leave available for pilots. The restaurant will remain open for breakfasts Saturday and Sunday...and genuine two-handed hamburgers are available throughout the day. It is dry and smokey as I write this on the 31st of July...that can change over night. Johnson Creek begins a few days after this flyin and the smoke will be much worse there. Schafer Meadows and Meadow Creek are still open at this writing but not recommended unless something changes. Benchmark is on fire. Please call or email if you know you are coming so we can determine how many dead animals we need. We had a great time out here last year and look forward to seeing you all again. Weather forecast for the weekend is for mid - high 80's with a slight chance of late afternoon rain...Lows in the low 50's at night. We had a welcome gentle shower last night. The Breaks are far enough from the fires where smoke has not been an issue. Unbelievable for the endless hot temps, but there is still a tinge of green to the ground.

We will meet in Winifred and depart for Cow Creek between 5-6:00 pm on Friday. If any of you are willing, please stop by to pick up a roll-a-table or other furniture. You are, of course, welcome to fly direct to Cow Creek and we will meet you there.

There will be no fires or cigarette smoking what so ever. Almost all the mountain based flyin activity has been canceled...I don't know if that means more people will be here because there is no where else to go...or fewer people, because there is no where to go after this.

More later....as Friday approaches. Ralph

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

We had early wild weather on Friday evening....Mike Vivion got to within 8 miles of Cow Creek and had to divert to Havre...the Billings guys were socked in (except for PA11Pilot who came early)...apparently the motorcyclist headed back from Sturgis were walking around under the overpasses.

After the storm...6:00pm it became beautiful and the air, for the first time in a month, crystal clear. Sunset at Cow Creek was spectacular...the food was spectacular...great time.

Cool and calm in the am.... Mike Vivion made it in and we really enjoyed the day and the backcountry. Saw lots of bighorn sheep...but didn't find the next Pope and YOung record.

Everyone who made it there....had a great time..

It is Monday as this response goes in.....light smoke in the sky now and 90F. Those that got here .... just got a great 2 day gift.

My thanks to the new friends and wonderful time this past weekend... Winifred's hangar and our house are always open. Ralph

Yep, we were all packed up and ready to go. Then we looked at the radar. It was just streaming up from the southwest with lots of yellow and red. My puddy with a Cub didn't go because it would take too long to get there after the weather cleared, missing dinner. I had no idea of knowing how much rain fell, that country turns to gumbo with an inch of rain. So we bagged it and went to Idaho instead on Saturday morning. Top of the smoke was 12,000. Moose Creek had 5-7 mile vsby and aircraft landing. Smooth flight.

Ralph forgot to mention he had people from Minnesota, Nebraska and North Carolina show up. Too bad some of us couldn't make it until Saturday.
