Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

8.50 x 6 on a C-172D

Anyone know who might have a 337 for mounting 8.50 x 6.00 on a C-172D? I'm considering buying a plane that once had em' mounted (along with a HD fork), and the 337 was lost, so the current owner removed them because he didn't want to revisit the hassle. I'd like to start the process over again because the tires come with the deal.

If it actually ever did have a 337 filed, you can just go to the FAA and get the CD with all the history of major repairs/alterations for I think about $5 and it will be there. Somewhere on this site someone posted a link for that a while back.
Getting someone else's 337 wont necessarily gauarantee you a field approval..but it can still be done. I'm doing 2 for 8.50 tires on Tcrafts right now...we just use the "tundra tire worksheet" that the ANC FSDO came up with, do a few test flights to prove controlability when loaded fore and aft, and a few other little things and away we go. It'll all depend on your (or your mechanic's) relationship with the PMI.

Here is the link to the FAA Aircraft Document Request website:

I think it is $10 for the cd. All of the files are PDFs, and Adobe Acrobat Reader is included on the cd if you don't have it already. I've ordered a few of them, it is a pretty simple and painless process. Kind of surprising for the FAA!

The 337 isn't all you need. You also need a copy of the STC paperwork. I suspect that if it included a nose fork, it is a Landes Airglas STC. You can contact them to also get copies of the paperwork for the stc.

I saw no mention of an STC in the original post... If there is an STC for those tires, and the nose fork, then it's not a big deal to buy the STC again and just go that way (and MTV's right in that case..you need a copy of the STC if possible..however, in the past it wasn't a big deal and many of the actual STC cover sheets aren't with the permanent paperwork).... however he mentioned that the previous owner didn't want to "revisit the hassle", so I'm betting there's no STC involved.

If you'd like to see what they look like on a '74 "M", I have a picture of mine at www.nl7co.com

Thanks for the replies. I'm pretty sure an STC never existed by the vague replies to my questions. I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth the effort to deal with the SEA FSDO about it. I figured if I could present some previous engineering data from another field approval it would help.

Thanks again,

Mike, not sure who your PMI would be there, but if you can, try to get ahold of Bill Reichardt. I dealt with him alot over there and he's a pretty good guy. He was a mechanic for quite a while before he became a Fed...and is about to retire. I doubt it would be too tough to get through with him.
Good luck!

I have paperwork for putting a larger front fork and 8.50's on a 1969 172K. It was approved many years ago in Alaska before I bought the beast...

It had 6x6 all the way around and at annual I got a set of 8x6 and put on the mains to "even" things out. My A&P/IA didn't even blink twice when I told him I wanted to put them on. I don't think he knew about the field approval for the 8.5 when we did the 8's. This was the first time he had done an annual on my plane.

I went through all the hassel and paper work on for a 1959 C172 if that helps. Should be on file under N6256E. I had the big nose fork and 8:500X6's. John

There are also quite a few folks up here that use a 206 nose fork. Also, I've heard that our FSDO is getting a bit sticky about putting 8.50's on a 172 and they won't allow it without the larger fork and larger nosewheel. The IA I know that wanted to do it is right now converting his 172 to tailwheel. Then he can go with the Cleveland kit with the double puck brakes for the 8.50's. That's what I did.
