Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

I am just curious what prompts your interest in swapping out the Scout's stock landing gear.

Was the original perhaps damaged and you just want to try another configuration?
Is it too bouncy for your type of operation?
Is the track too large and looking for something narrower?

Maule I know offers both types for folks with various needs & preferences. I really love the Scout. I know they made some changes I think around 2007?.., but I am not sure whether there were any changes at all in the landing gear. ??

I don't like to look at images of Scouts on the computer, because I end up drooling on my keyboard :)

Re: 8BCGC landing gear

My limited knowledge...(call/email ACA or do an STC search [FAA website] if more information is needed)

I know of two types so far, 8GCBC delivered from factory:

(1) Steel spring MLG with external brake hydraulic lines (no longer on factory new)

(2) Aluminum spring MLG with internal hydraulic brake lines (pictured below SN #509)

Re: 8BCGC landing gear

I'm surprised anyone would be interested in changing away from leaf spring (either alum or steel) landing gear to bungee type Cub style gear. Leaf spring gear is about as maintenance free as you can get, and about as unbreakable as you can get too. if it's too springy, get some bushwheels.

Several years ago, it seemed like lotsa people were switching from bungee gear to Grove spring gear on their Kitfoxes & Avids. I'm actually kinda surprised that no one makes a leaf spring gear conversion for the Cub. Ted Setzer of GlasStar fame built a set of Cub style gear for his GlasStar Sportsman a couple years ago, but I believe he went back to the standard rod gear since then. I think a leaf spring gear conversion for the GlasStar /Sportsman would be a good thing, to add some fore-and-aft stiffness, but I don't know if the gear attach fittings on the fuselage are compatible with flat gear.

Agreed...

I love going (10) knots faster too! Bushwheels (31") @ 10 PSI installed ...the 8GCBC is pretty hard to bounce. Also, just dump the flaps during touchdown if you need to stick it. It will drop like a "ton of bricks" when dumping the flaps.

The spring gear axles have "spring" in (3) axis which helps prevent damage to a stiff longitudinal axle. Good when on skis where there are tremendous torsional loads in tight turns.

ACA (Grove produced) introduced internal hydraulic brake lines too which reduces parasitic drag.

Options are good. I made my choice and have no regrets.

Re: 8BCGC landing gear

Cub and Oleo style gear legs have much better rebound dampening behavior. Sure, they are a little more complex with more joints and consumable parts (bungees) but if you have the chance to fly them back to back, you'll notice the dampened gear can really take the rodeo out of a landing. The next level obviously is the modern fluid-damped shocks that people are putting on their bush planes, like the outboard Porter-style.

Spring gear are undeniably simpler and cleaner though. Probably out of luck on a certified bird like the Scout.
