9/25/2010 - WA/OR PDX area Flying weather!

Tomorrow looks too good to waste.

Where to fly? Where to go?

Hit some local strips? Head to the beach if it's not foggy? Head east?

I knew if I sat down and actually made some plans someone would reply.

Pancakes at Independence would be good.

I was considering of flying up to Santium junction then bushwhacking up to Maxwell butte. May just scope the area out from the air instead (plus landing at Santium of course).

I'm probably going to roll out of Pearson by 9:00. I'll have the spousal unit with me. Yellow Stinson in the H row of hangars.

Alright. I'll try to be over there by 9:00. If I get up early I'll just hit a few strips in North County. If I'm my usual lazy self, I'll just head right over there.

Chad, Dave, and I talked about going to the Flying M Ranch on Sunday for breakfast.
Gillette fly-in sounds like fun. Chad wants to do dinner at the steak house at Albany Saturday.
I have some work to do this weekend. Work in one hand.......flying in the other.......I might just have to work more hours next week :D

What's the name of the steak house? I might be able to make that. Weather is looking great for today. \:D/

Cascade grill, there is a small transient parking area at the NE end of the field. Follow the fence North to the man gate and head East 100yds.
We usually taxi off the blacktop and park at the man gate.
I can't go, not sure about Chad.

Independance for $105 breakfast. Thinking Santium pass, west of Jefferson, Davis, then lebannon for fuel.

Quick landing at santium pass, 3700'. Crappy gravel runway. Clearing trees on takeoff a bit puckery. Davis was shorter but only 1200' elevation and nice grass. Resting in Lebannon where the shade is cool and the gas is reasonable.

I'm hearing the faint whispers of dinner calling!

The heavy equipment paving the runway was a subtle clue. Oh well, I can have a beer with dinner at home.

Lazy day today with the raindrops pattering on the roof.

Image
Fog finally broke up around 10:00. I was wondering if I'd make it down to Independence in time for breakfast.

Image
Completely socked in towards the coast. From a distance, Independence looked like it could be just inside or just outside of the fog layer. Salem reporting patchy fog.

Clear enough! Keep those cakes hot.

Image
The $105 dollar breakfast, made to order. I may have been the last one. The advantage of being late is shortly thereafter leftover sausages and ham were offered up.

Image
Green Peter Lake. I guess that's what happens when it gets all dammed up.

Davis airstrip. 1900' long open to the public strip. Fun.

Damn, another good PNW flying day wasted by work...

Looks like a good day of flying. Is Santiam Jct. in decent condition?

Decent is a relative term. It was decent enough I didn't bury the nose in the soft patches of gravel here and there. I just did a landing then kept rolling to prevent picking anything loose up into the prop. Looked like ruts had been filled with gravel but also looked like they could have used rolling to flatten them out a bit.

Visually it had an ugly/industrial quality about it, not a blade of grass in site. I wouldn't recommend it as a camping destination but might be an okay base for day hikes or over-nighters into the wilderness. No real close trailheads so one would need to be comfortable with some bushwhacking/cross country travel. Terrain looked pretty good for that.

Once again, tomorrow (10/16/10) is looking like a fine day for flying.... once the fog clears. Might give me an opportunity to finish waxing the darned thing if it does hang in.

If anyone in the area wants company, post or send a PM.

Me and the wife are going somewhere for lunch. We kinda thought Pacific City if the fog lifts. But we are flexible. Other options, Hood River, Mulino, Salem, Independence, McMinnville, Madras, Sun River, Bend.

Cheers

There is a BBQ at McMinnville Saterday at 4:00, we will be there. Hoping for some weather on Sunday for the wife's maiden ride in the Cessna. She is pretty much good with any weather.....as long as there is no "bumps".

Re: 9/25/2010 - WA/OR PDX area Flying weather!

Checking weather now. Will head out to the airport soon. I'll check messages before heading out anywhere.

Fog may build and hang into the coast and valley until 10 or so then will get gusty central oregon and coast between 12-2. East side looks atypically calm. Looking mostly clear in the area now. We'll probably have a typical fog build that hangs around a good chunk of the morning. Doubt I could get out before that happens.
