9/27/09 San Luis Valley Pilots Assn Creede, CO (C24) fly-in

Our annual Creede fly-in is rapidly approaching. Good news this year is the addition of a Subaru station wagon courtesy car. Primitive camping is allowed on the field. Great accomodations/ restaurants in town.
Once again, the ladies from the Blue Creek Lodge will be preparing breakfast (not burritos this year). B-fast starts at 8 am. Call me @ 719 850 1411 or Randy Riggs @ 719 850 1575. We need a fairly close count for the Blue Creek Lodge.

The only thing that would keep me away is bad WX or if Obama has a health care meeting. Count me in as I already have a motel reservation. HC

Re: 9/27/09 San Luis Valley Pilots Assn Creede, CO (C24) fly-in

I'm waiting to hear this week if I can book the plane for the weekend. I'm looking at flying in Saturday morning and setting up camp where ever and spending the night, breakfast in the morning..and then pack up and go flying around a bit before heading back home. Although Bill has mentioned I should just go in Friday afternoon and stay a couple of nights. That does sound tempting...I did go buy new camping gear today!

Re: 9/27/09 San Luis Valley Pilots Assn Creede, CO (C24) fly-in

Last minute addendum: A little east of creede is a private strip known as Morning Shadows (on the DEN sectional). The owner, Lionel Carpenter, has recently expressed interest in hosting a fly-in there. Shortfielder suggested the day before the Creede fly-in Sat. 27th. I have run that by Lionel and he loves the idea. It is a beautiful strip 4000' long and pretty well taken care of (Lionel used to keep his 150hp 172 there). You can land and depart in either direction, but there is rising terrain in all quadrants. I will try to post photo's later. There is room for 4-5 aircraft to tie down near the hangar, more than that will have to tie down next to the strip on the south end. There is a beautiful camping area adjacent to his cabin in the trees a short walk from the hangar.
Lionel is planning on a hot dog roast Sat eve and I will provide water/lemonade/beer. If you want anything else, bring it.
I am also working on a liabilty release for Lionel, when I have it I will email to you, fax return to me.

I can't go into Mountain Shadows since it's not paved (stupid rental rules). I plan on arriving at Creede Saturday morning around 9-10 local and then leaving sometime on Sunday.

For those of you going to the Morning Shadows strip Sat 26: We were not able to get a waiver of liability together, the owner wishes to express "LAND AT YOU OWN RISK". I will be there at morning to direct parking: Room for 4 to 5 down by the hangar. The rest will have to tie down on the side of the runway on the south end. (right now only 4 to 5 aircraft confirmed). Windsock on southern end by the hangar, I usually land to the south. Takeoffs work both ways. Bring your own tie downs of course. Great camping spot in the Cottonwood trees by the cabin. bmurrish has volunteered to follow this post with a couple of photo's 1)airstrip looking north 2) hangar/cabin area from the air. Call 719 850 1411 with questions.

Roger that. I take full responsibility for all my actions good and bad. Thank you Mr. Carpenter for the invitation to your strip. I look forward to meeting you.

bmurrish checking in safe at home. Wow!!! What a trip! Tom, you sure put together one hell of a weekend. Thanks for introducing us to some of Colorado's hidden treasures. Lionel sure has a little slice of heaven there at Morning Shadows. The hot springs pool was awesome and flying low in the valley to Creede was a hoot. Thank you so much for the invite.

Cheers,

Bill

I'm home now too. Tom thanks again so much, and pass on to Lionel as well. I had the best flying weekend ever! I broke 100hrs and got to fly in Bill's 180, Gary's 180, and Rob's Maule! Flying that canyon into Creede was the most beautiful and exciting flying I've done on my own. The springs was cool, and Morning Shadows is a dream! I can't wait to come back down to the area again. Pics later...I need a shower!
