A BackcountryPilot.Org fly-in in your own backyard

While at the fly-in a few weeks ago, a few us talked about the accessibility of the event for our members who simply aren't within reasonable flying distance to attend, and what could we do about that?

I know that if I lived in 2500 miles from Johnson Creek, I'd start to get a little tired of the hype surrounding Idaho flying, and wonder why can't this annual get-together be a little closer to home?

Well, why can't it? All I am going to say is that I wholly encourage our members who live in the regions of the US that are just too many gallons of 100LL away, to think about putting together your own fly-in. After all, the purpose of this site is community building, making new friends, and sharing flying tales. That shouldn't be relegated to Idaho or the Northwest, and it's all the better when you make a new friend who is within reasonable flying distance.

Thoughts? Come forward east coasters, southerners, midwesterners, alaskans...

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

We have a little strip near Tonasket WA that would be a good place for a fly in. On Fathers day weekend we invited people to come and camp, we had Four planes and a few drove in. If there is any interest we could do it again.

We are having our 2nd annual maine bushwacker flyin august 16th . We posted this here last year and a few pilots from this site showed. We had a very good turnout in general show over the weekend on floats and wheels. The coordinates are 44* 31' 22.33" N 70*32' 47.88" W.

BCP is going regional !

I like it.

If there is ever an interest in a Columbia O22 fly-in, I'd be more than happy to help put the thing together. Keep in mind it's too damn hot past June and before October with early spring being about the best but we may have to dodge some weather.

I enjoy Johnson Creek in the late spring, early summer but it's only about 400 miles for me.

This is a very generous offer. It would be great to flyin there and camp a few days. What did you have in mind?

How about Page, AZ in October......fly pylons around monument valley in the early morning....gooding's....Lee's ferry for fishing....San juan goose necks...Bryce Canyon......lots closer to Socal , Sw colorado & AZ folks.....maybe pick up a texan or two......

Maybe more folks could enjoy the company of "BCAH.org" & bcp.org...why just one event a year?????

I've already got the ball rolling for another forum group .....why not combine groups.....pilots is pilots......and page is a short hop from Socal...relatively speaking....and close to southern Utah's challenging strips....some of the other forum's members may not be as hard core as this bunch and want to include spouses /kids....so Page offers more optional entertainment than a backcountry dry camp....those with big balls could seek the outback while other could enjoy the convience of a restaurant and soft bed....

Thoughts??????

Food, Folks and Fun !

Great Idea, though I dont get tired of reading about all the fun you guys have down there, it does make me want to have a little too. I spend 90% of my flying around alone, not that it's a bad thing but would be fun to share a camp fire once in a while. I have a great strip here along the Knik River just below the glacier.... within a short hop to several wonderful Lil. strips up in the glacier valley. So, attention all you Alaskan members let's
plan a lil. get togather, share some grub and get to know other members.
If no one objects we could extend the invatation to SC.org as well .

Have plenty of room here or we could pick a site up near the ice supply...
So if you so inclined and want to socialize a bit with like minded folks, let's
start planning. You can contact me at [email protected]

take care

The Good Lord does not deduct those days from our alloted quota, spent fishing, flying or with our Grandchildren.......

We should at least get a table at Gwennies during the Trade Show since several of us from the outside come up for it.

Hey! What about New Mexico? Ya jumped from Az to Texas and left out the good stuff in the middle. :) (At least two 180 drivers who wear your Insurance Co. hats)

We're working to get NM "on the map" for recreational flying. Just met with the RAF folks and expect to get a website going soon.

Getting to meet you fine folks without changing time zones sounds great to me.

Well, should we pick a weekend and set it up? It is kind of hot over there this time of year, at least for us coasties, maybe a little closer to the fall? Anyone is welcome to camp on there own if they want, just let us know cuse the neighbors watch the place pretty close when we arn't there. It would be nice to see some others get some enjoyment out of the place. It is beautiful in it's own way.

That could work now that the Medellin and Pablo Escobar are out of power.

Hi Mark,

Count me in for a Columbia fly-in, too. October's a good idea. I love the grass runway. Truly a feather bed.

Isn't Columbia kind of like Johnson Creek, only 400 miles south? I like the idea of a fly-in there though. Last fall was incredible flying weather.

My original intent for this thread was to encourage people who don't stand a chance at making it this far out west to mix it up, but I suppose any kind of regional get togethers are a small victory.

Who knows, but this time next year, avgas might be so expensive that we can only afford to fly to the neighboring county to visit.

It's Columbia for me. I love it there. Except for the paved runway. I'll be landing on the grass.....

Ok here's a crazy idea. What about a rolling flyin starting in the south west in the winter when the flying is best there. Start one in New one in New Mexico, then a month later have another in Nevada and Texas. Then keep moving east and west, fly to the ones closest, maybe make some new flying friends that are fairly close, and then have the whole thing culminate in Idaho or Oregon in July.

That's a great idea.
