I've been reading (for the second time) "Corky Meyer's Flight Journal". An amazing history, written by one Corwin (Corky) Meyer, who started his Experimental Flight Test career with Grumman in 1942. His first Experimental Flight Test Program was the Grumman F6F fighter. His last was the F-14. Lots of little stories, many of which will simply amaze.
Example: The F-8 Bearcat was designed as a super light weight and very powerful fighter, compared to previous designs. It was built so light that there was concern about overstressing the wings. Solution: Install "frangible" wing tips and aileron tips. Yes, over G it, and the wing tips were designed to break off. Problem was, what happens if ONE (and only one) tip broke off? Solution: Install an 18 inch long strip of prima cord, with an electronic igniter connected to the OTHER tip, to blow off the tip that remained attached.....
Now, think about going out as the test pilot on THAT project..... https://amzn.to/4iJQyw1
Great book.
