A week of airplane camping.

Covid be damned, two friends and I are flying 2 airplanes all over WA, OR, UT, and possibly ID starting tomorrow. All three of us are jobless for the week so the goal is to burn through at least 3 cases of Bodhizafa, eat lots of cheese, and burn at least 150 gallons of avgas.

Anyone wanting to meet up or invite us to your private strip? Post or shoot me a message. I think at least one of us is friendly....

Re: A week of airplane camping.

Quite a few fires with associated TFRs around, so be sure to check NOTAMS and some form of mapping of those.

A cold front is supposed to come south on Monday. Can’t come soon enough"....lots of houses threatened by a fire here.

Fly safe, and enjoy.

Re: A week of airplane camping.

I follow Cliff Mass, a weather blogger here in the Northwest, and he talks about the extremely dangerous weather pattern setting up for fires the next couple of days. Right now here at home it’s a beautiful clear day, but if the winds shift to south to north we could see some smoke.
I also have been following the GOES visible satellite photos. Pretty amazing views. And just checked the webcam at Johnson Creek and appears the visibility is getting worse.

Hey tcj,
Don’t see the winds out of the east in Ellensburg very often. Cliff was right on his prediction. I’m on the west side in Enumclaw and the east winds are howling with hazy skies.

Thanks tcj. That is not good. Really peppered across Oregon. Our forecast wx is not going to help any of those.

It's definitely not been a great few weeks for flying here in the Gem State. Lots of smoke coming and going, yesterday we had horrendous winds. The good news is that daily highs are starting to come down.

I heard this year was a record for acres burned in California.

Snow above about 6000 feet msl here in western Montana. Good news, though it'd been better a few days earlier. A number of houses burned here on Saturday, with extreme fire weather.

Rain last night, and snow at higher elevations should slow it down some here at least. But, the fire season isn't over just yet, I'm betting.

Re: A week of airplane camping.

The town of Malden, WA (south west of Spokane) is pretty much gone after yesterday's firestorm. Cured wheat, high winds, low humidity, and a spark or two. I'm guessing many (most?) of the big fires in this state had a human at the point of ignition. RH was up this am, and last night temps were just above freezing in Spokane.

You'd sure think that with all the fires, & all the media coverage of the fires, and the smoky skies,
that people would be extra careful.
But unfortunately, it's not too hard to believe that you're right in that most of these fires are probably human caused.

People are dumber than a sack of hammers when it comes to wildland fire ignition.

I mean, pyrotechnics at a "Gender Reveal Party" in California????

They're trying to figure out the point of ignition of the Bridger Foothills fire near Bozeman. It started near a trail in dense forest. I wouldn't want to be the one that lit that one.....28 high end homes burned. Fortunately, no people were killed, though some livestock perished.

But, they keep lighting them. We haven't had any lightning for a while here, so all the fires around here are likely human caused.

Re: A week of airplane camping.

We just got back into town yesterday afternoon. We went all over Oregon and basically got chased around by fires. We flew past the fire northeast of Roseburg before the TFR went active and found a pretty sizable layer of wind that was keeping us well upwind from the smoke.

Here is the result:

It was pretty gnarly.
