Advice Needed: Tahoe, Yosemite, & Redwoods

+1 for Alpine M45 for a stop or camping, there is nothing and I mean nothing there on the airport but the runway itself and parking, which is a good thing, but a very short hop down to KMEV for fuel and airport cafe if needed.

I don't know about the Carson River but Indian Creek Reservoir is a short walk and is known for its trout fishing (and for the closest vault privy to the runway ;). ) There is an official primitive county campground at the lake if you don't want to camp on the airport.

Re: Advice Needed: Tahoe, Yosemite, & Redwoods

Hey everyone. Just an update since I had so many gracious offers of cars and help for this trip. Unfortunately, we are going to have to put this trip on the back burner for another year. With all the cash we are paying for a radio upgrade, we decided to do a little less ambitious trip this year. We will be heading up to Montana and northern Idaho before heading south for the fly-in.

I'll keep this thread as a reference for when we do it and wanted to say thank you for all the advice and offers of cars, etc. I'll probably be hitting you up in the future for more advice when we do it!

Thanks,
Cory

Cory, when do you think you'll be in Northern Idaho? My wife and I are planning to take the 185 to the GV fly-in, so it looks like we would be leaving Sandpoint (KSZT) early on the 27th to get down there. If you are thinking about staying overnight up there around KSZT, we might be able to work something out for you! Oh, and some hangar space for overnight, too... I'll have to double-check my schedules!

Hey Mike,

We will be in your area...probably around the 23-24th time frame. We are leaving around the 19th, heading to MT, then over to Cavanaugh Bay before heading south. Let me know if you're around. Be great to meet up!

You can actually catch a bus to the Valley at the Tioga Mart gas station 1/4 mile from the Lee Vining airport. But the bus runs only once a day from the Valley to Mammoth, and it stops at Tuolumne meadows and at the gas station (a gas station, I might add, that is famous for its gourmet food). Except for the lobster tacquitos there isn't much else there so don't miss the bus.

I once flew into Mammoth, hiked the John Muir Trail from Mammoth to Yosemite with my family and then took the bus back to Mammoth. We did Half Dome in the moonlight and watched the sunrise from the top, which was pretty cool.

There used to be a B&B at the Pine Mountain Lake airport in Groveland that came with the use of a van and I always thought that would be a great place to land for a Valley visit. But I googled around and it must have disappeared.
