Advice on flying to Panama

Has anyone ever flown to Central America? Specifically the Carribean coast of Panama? I'm going to fly my Sportsman down there in May/June timeframe. Thinking of doing it on Floats, but my only option is straight floats or wheels. I haven't really sat down and planned anything yet, but have been looking at flying to Key West and then across to Cancun and down the coast? Any suggestions from anyone who has flown there?

Re: Advice on flying to Panama

I was think of doing this myself as my brother lives there now. Flying into Mexico is fairly straight forward...but more than that I am not sure of. There are companies that will handle all the paper work and help with planning. This might be worth it for a first timer. Another route might be finding someone with ferry experience in Central America and contracting that pilot to help with planning or even to go along on the trip until such time as you feel that you have the hang of it. I am sure it is very doable. I am also sure that if you screw up it could cost you more than getting help would have.

I flew internationally on the African continent, but wouldn't have tried it without my employer's help on permits and logistics.

With floats you are going to run into problems finding places to land that are secure and have fuel, are legal etc.
I wouldn't personally cross that much water in a single engine recip unless there was no option.
