Aero Vee & Bush King Engines-Knowledge ?

So does anyone have experience with either of these engines? I am ultra lusting a Rans/PA11 size plane. (Homebuilt of course) I am just looking/reading up on variouse engines. Obviously the Rotax 912/914 is a popular choice. Only problem is you are looking at $18-24K.

In the end I am afraid you get what you pay for, but sometimes you can buy economical. I also like the idea of the Lycoming 0-290(G), but my IA says they are getting hard to find some parts for. (Standard Pistons)

A guy at my work is building with an AeroVee 80hp, and he seems happy enough with his choice.
My 2c - there is no substitute for cubic inches (I would have gone 120hp 8) ).
Have fun.

Re: Aero Vee & Bush King Engines-Knowledge ?

The vw/corvair motors are too high rpm to run a decent STOL prop length. They work ok (at best) in the little runway hoppers (sonex kr2 etc) but are not suitable for a "cub" type plane.

I've seen too many of them fail and will personally never fly behind one. IMO.

If you watch for them and actively look (other than just Barnstormers) you can find good deals on used (especially 80 hp) 912 motors. A buddy just bought one with less than 100 hours on it for $4500.

What he said...a big prop turning slow is what an S-7 likes. The Bush King is geared but does not seem to have many fleet hours. The damn Rotax 912S ( love the engine just wish it cost less) is still the best PROVEN powerplant. All others are second best especially when world wide fleet hrs are considered.
