A single-engine private plane carrying two people crashed late Friday morning at a private airport near Sonoma but both the pilot and passenger were unharmed, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s office reported Friday afternoon.
The crash, reported about 11:45 a.m., occurred at Sonoma Skypark, a privately owned public-use airport east of Sonoma.
The pilot, Leon Scarbrough, 74, of Sonoma, told deputies he was conducting touch-and-go landing and takeoff exercises when the small plane got off course while on land and went into the grass off the runway, the sheriff’s office reported.
Scarbrough said that moments before the crash he applied power to the plane’s engine but was unable to achieve liftoff, the sheriff’s office said.
Upon arrival, deputies found the plane in a group of berry bushes at the southeast corner of the airport.
Scarbrough and his passenger, an unidentified 19-year-old Sonoma resident, walked away from the crash unharmed, deputies reported.
The two-seat plane, a 1950 Aeronca Champ, suffered minor damage, including damage to the struts that run between the wings and the fuselage, said Sonoma police Sgt. Spencer Crum.
