Air lantern

Got two of these recently, they are pretty cool. Super light, no batteries, weigh nothing, what's not to like? The flashing mode could be quite effective at night if ever needed. I'll be using them for real this weekend :o http://survivalfrog.com/products/solar- ... bid=147858

Re: Air lantern

They are light, as in don't weigh much. They'd be a pain to weight down but possible I guess.

One thing I found, the button that turns them on is about impossible to find by feel, in the dark. You need some light to turn the light on #-o I can think of some go arounds though, a minor detail, especially since I got the smart phone with the flashlite app, love that thing. =D>

I was thinking of glueing them to my 18" steel discs that mark the sides of my strip?
I would like to find the same thing with no bag attached!!
Thanks

Re: Air lantern

Go to Home Depot and buy a bunch of their garden or walk lights. Not too bright, but as long as you only need them to show the runway while landing, should be bright enough. You don't need to see them from five miles if you know where to look.....

The only problem with them are they stick up a bit and the dam coyotes seem to like to scatter them about as fast as I can stick them in the gound!!
Have a LED Strobe on top of the Flagpole so can find that pretty easy.

Air lanterns are cool! We use a couple in the tent.

For the strip we use these, a top off with diesel keeps them running more than all night, critters don't mess with them, they're heavy enough to stay put, and brighter than the small solar ones that line our walk way. Down side is there's no remote lighting, and depending on your area there may be some fire concerns.

Re: Air lantern

I camped out last weekend near Copper Basin and got to use my new Air Lantern for real. =D> =D> =D> I love this thing, it's easy to position in the tent anywhere you want it with a small alligator clip or even a cloths pin, you can't break it short of walking on it. It's surprisingly bright, even on the lower setting. Win/win. I am getting rid of my earlier electric LED lights that use batteries AND aren't as convenient to use AND weigh more AND take up more room. Plus my candles that I've carried for years as a backup. My second one I ordered (before actually using the first) will be here this week, with both in the tent, I may need sunglasses.

Re: Air lantern

How are your air lanterns holding out? Used mine a couple of times, and then it died at OSH this year. Will not charge. May have been the heat at OSH as it was hot hot hot.

Re: Air lantern

Mine are working great, I used them this last weekend on a road trip in fact. The small stored size was appreciated as I kept them in the Toyota's jockey box, along with all the usual crap of course. When I got pulled over by a CHP trooper for what HE said was a illegal u turn  and then for some reason he asked to see my registration, proof of insurance, and even my drivers license for some reason, he asked what the Air Lanterns were. Maybe they looked like some kind of device for an illegal substance or something, but after I showed him what they were and how they worked, he let me off with a laugh and a warning. I played the dumb hick from Idaho to the max of course, plus conceded he may have had a point about the u turn, I think my FLY IDAHO, A PILOT'S PARADISE license plate helped get me off too. I can't get over how bright those lights are, two of them on low give me all the light I need, two being good for eliminating shadows as opposed to one.

Re: Air lantern

After contacting Luci and going back & forth a bit, they agreed to replace mine under warranty. We'll see how the new one holds up. Will be on a camping/canoe trip in the Everglades in February. I'll use it there,

Re: Air lantern

I can vouch for these. They broadcast a good amount of light without actually having to look at the LED. Kinda reminds me of looking at an aquarium  As far as camping lights they are the best bang for the buck. They put out all the functional light you need and "refueling" them is a lot easier and cheaper; no need to transport and manage fuel, etc. Have two now, will get more. Would make an excellent Christmas gift for anyone outdoorsy or needing inexpensive portable light on your list.

Re: Air lantern

I got a couple to just see how they worked. Have them hanging off the roof of the deck, other than having to turn them on everynight(wish they had a solar eye) they work great! light up well past midnight. Have been using them a lot!

Re: Air lantern

Duration of their light in my use has been longer then I cared to stay up while camping! I'm done before they are.

Their flashing mode could also be used as a emergency signal, no extra charge for that feature. I need to get a few soon for Christmas presents for some friends, they are cheap enough to generous with, ho ho ho.
