Aircamping

Does anyone know the history of fly in camping? Or the history of aircamping? I would like to know.

Well, my guess would be it sounded better to tell someone you had PLANNED to spend the night under the wing, rather then admit to some sort of mechanical problem! Think back to the first guy barnstorming along on a XC, Cal Rodgers in the Vin Fiz or maybe Art Smith (both pre 1910), and the first time they realized they were stuck wherever for the night and the wing they had brought/had brought them was pretty good shelter, better then nothing anyway. What we do nowadays is by choice. I've always felt sorry for the poor guys flying low wings, I don't care how fast they may be, at the end of the day I'll take a high wing! Any airshow, you don't see people congregating under the wing of a Cirrus, it'll be a Cub or other highwinger.

I am still waiting for the first homebuilt aircraft to have a slideout like current RV's have, I thought of it first dammit!

Re: Aircamping

I did get on Americanaircampers web site, there was a threat notice on my PC. I left a message that I am looking for the earliest known USFS designated Aircamp in the US, Tunnel Meadows was created in 1931 specifically for recreation, sometime after that it was officially designated as an Aircamp. I think and feel that there is historic value in this. Any comments?

I think so too. I would be interested in hearing what you find out.

Re: Aircamping

Sorry for the problems Pat, I put warning note on it (figured if I delete it, someone else will just post it again).
