Changing plans.

I'm fixing to sell the CH701 kit and am better than 50% sure it will go this weekend. I'm going to buy an already built airplane from somebody someplace.

There is a Rans S6ES located at 7G8 Geauga County near Cleveland Ohio that has caught my eye. Another fellow here has asked lots of questions about it but apparently has not made his move, so I'm on the hunt. I wrote Swingle about it and he's putting me on to an IA to take a look.

For a variety of reasons, not the least of which I fell off a ladder at the end of January and broke my back, I don't think I want to fly the thing back here on my own. I'm not sure I can sit for the kind of time needed for a cross country of that length. Etc.

So, does anyone have experience with a ferry pilot or organization of same that they trust? There are lots of people out there doing this sort of thing and some of them are fools; or so I've been told.

I'm also looking at a flying CH701 in Nampa that I can get home on my own. We'll see.

Don't know her but the gal who owns this outfit showed up at Port Townsend yesterday to ferry a Bellanca Super Viking off to Montana or Minnesota or somewhere. The uyl who handed the airplane over to her told me she said they're real busy.

Just pay Swingle to do it. I think he has his CPL. The guy flies across the country like a beast.

If I can talk him into it that would be ideal. It would be awfully nice to have him involved somehow. I would not ordinarily be after a 116 wing but Gravity Knight has talked me into it and he's taking full responsibility if I don't like it.....

Keep me posted, if you decide against this a/c let me know because I'm still interested but I'm currently in the middle of moving, so too many irons in the fire presently.

You know, I've watched as many of your videos as I can find and I have to say it does real real good at 6600' in the Colorado Rockies. Some of those scenes look like it might be hot out too. Have you looked close at the pictures of the Red One? I notice that on yours one can see the VGs well but not so much on that Ohio airplane. I wonder if they are in the right place? I guess Maverick has the layout template for VGs on the 116 wing.

It has a GS composite prop.

If you can get swingle to do it that would be the go! But if not Ive been intouch now with sarah from full throttle aviation for some time via facebook, and reguarly follow the progress of her ferry flights. She appears to be a very capable pilot in anything with wings, runs a very professional operation and everyone seems to rave about her. I would reccomend her as strongly as a person can from the other side of the world

I wish I could help but while I was away at the STOL Roundup the asparagus crop grew three feet, and with other prospects I'm out of the game indefinately...unless it's to ferry my plane to its next owner

I hope it works out and is a good plane for you, but there are more fish in the sea, so don't force it!

You got that right Greg. My wife's Uncle Jorgy told me long ago that all you need is a good airplane at a fair price. Don't get hung up in the details. At this point I'm hoping my back heals up enough to get out to Rocky Mountain Kitplanes and fly with Mark Pringle. He's got a 6 with the 116 wing that I can shake down. I talked to Randy Schiltter too and he's pretty confident that the little wing will work given my stated mission. The thing has almost 2 pounds less wing loading than a 172. I like wing loading. Especially in the bumps and gusts. It must be a hold-over from my Mooney days.

Well, I'm glad I said I was 50% sure of the sale of my Zenith. Today was to be the payoff and transfer of ownership and my buyer (a surveyor) fell in an open ditch at work and will be off work for months. He's in the hospital.

My first thought was, "Why does everything always happen to me?" What about that poor schmuck? Oh well. Anybody looking for a

Why did you lose interest in the 701?

I really woulda-shoulda-coulda been interested in it, but I bought another semi-ultralight kit (Kolb) to play with. Damnit, I really like the 701...

What stage is it, and what are you asking for it, and (if you would benefit) I'll be glad to spread the word on another forum and in a couple of local EAA chapters.

The main reason I quit on it Bill is that I broke my back and turned 66 years old. I don't know how much longer I've got to fly but I want to be flying not building. I'll post an ad in marketplace after awhile here and see what kind of interest I can stir up. $7500. The local buyer here got hurt at work and backed out of the deal last Friday. It's the complete kit fire wall back and the tail group and rear fuselage is done. The door frames are mostly done but most folks buy the bubble doors these days. I may buy a completed CH701 or a Rans S6ES to get me back in the air.

I moved what is essentially an experimental kitfox in February in an enclosed 50 ft airbed truck with the plane the only load from outside Tampa Florida to just south of San Jose California for $2300 using UTI Transports with

He had no experience with loading/unloading an airplane; the source end was no problem and the FBO at the destination end handled the unloading.

My intent from the beginning had been to ferry the plane out and received bids: one, increasing from $3600 and, the other, increasing from $5000. The one increasing from $5000 was from the pilot who had flown the 40 hours off. Both would stick around for familiarity training.

With those numbers, I thought "what the hell?" and asked for quotes for trucking the plane out. I was not surprised by the 1st quote coming in at $5800 but Rory's quote seemed to be too good to be true.

In this case, trucking worked out wonderful. Maybe it could work out that way for you

I just had really good results (price) for shipping a Kolb ultralight kit from NC to CA using YRC freight. This is the old "Yellow Freight" company that was re-named after a merger with Roadway. YRC stands for Yellow Roadway Corporation I think.

I had originally put this shipping load up for bid on that "U-ship" bid website. Got only one bid for over $900, and had to take it because there were no other bids. Then the guy tried to jack up the price another few hundred after I had accepted the bid, and I backed out on principle.

The seller of the kit suggested YRC. I went to their site, got an online estimate of $475, and turned that estimate into a job contract on the spot.

The shipping company had damaged a couple of the "loose" parts that had not been boxed up (H-stabilizers), but that could have been avoided by the seller. He did not box, wrap, or pad these parts correctly. The parts were easy to scratchbuild new ones (simple tube/gusset/pop rivets) so I just built new horizontal stabilizers instead of arguing about it with the shipper or YRC.

But overall, the shipment got here for half the price of the other option. Granted that Dan's partially built 701 kit might be larger and bulkier than the Kolb I shipped... and smaller than rjb's completed Kitfox... but the overall cost reduction of using YRC is probably a similar ratio.

My buyer from last week contacted me this morning and says he's still interested. Apparently his injuries were/are subsiding and he's expected to return to work soon so maybe this thing will go through. Having just sustained a significant injury myself I'm content to give him a chance at it. So that's good eh?
