Airplane Lands on Banks-Lowman Road

Here is a news story by KBCI, Boise Idaho.

"By KBCI Web Staff LOWMAN - Drivers heading to Lowman saw an interesting spectacle on the side of the road Wednesday.

Boise County dispatch says a pilot flying a single engine airplane was forced to land on the Banks-Lowman road after the plane's engine gave out.

The plane landed safely near milepost 29 by Deadwood. No injuries were reported. The pilot was the only one one board."

I saw this bird on Thurday while driving the Banks-Lowman Road. It is parked at the mouth of the Deadwood River, on the west side of the river. I would say it is amazing that the pilot pulled this off with only minor damage to the right wingtip. There is a power line that follows the road and crosses it every several hundred yards or so, and then there are no straight stretches to speak of. Milepost 29 comes out at a point about 7/10 of a mile downstream from where this bird is parked. Look it up on Google Earth (44-04-02, 115-39-31) not much room to land- especially having to deal with the power line-that may be impossible to see!

This airplane is out of Boise. Maybe some of the members from that area can find out exactly where he landed and relay the full story.

I was a passenger in a 172 that developed carb ice and landed on the highway near Island Park. Whole different story there as the road was straight and wide and no power lines to deal with.

Sure would hate to have to land on that highway.. he obviously did well!

We landed on a curvy highway in Montana years back -- somehow it was just straight enough, the trees on one side ended, and the two semis parted in perfect timing to make a perfect spot.

Sometimes you get lucky.

Re: Airplane Lands on Banks-Lowman Road

I saw this on the 28th when I drove down from Stanley to Boise. Talk about being surprised when you come around the corner. I take it the N# was blocked out due to legal things, but I can tell you I saw the N# and Air Taxi Logo on the plane, and someone else mentioned the company earlier. Either way, it was awfully interesting seeing that parked on the side of one of the most crooked roads in Idaho. I was giving my friend's girlfriend a ride to the airport that day and she said it was parked somewhere else when she came up on the 23rd. (Not sure if that is true, she has no idea where she is when she is here because she's from Tennessee:-) After driving that road for most of my life, I really can't say that there are any stretches of that road that are straight for more than 500-600 feet long. Maybe had to land on a curve. I'm guessing it was a slow landing. Whoever the pilot was (SP) was lucky they were near that road when things went bad because there is nothing around there to land on, other than Garden Valley, which is a bit more than a glide away.

Re: Airplane Lands on Banks-Lowman Road

The pilot who made that landing sure had his act together! I know that area and the landing had to be a major pucker factor!

I used to go riding @ Lowman when I was temporarily living in Boise in 1993. There's a good restaurant and nice bar there, as I recall.

Is the outfitter still there? I think they were called Greenfeather Adventures or Southfork Adventures back then. I remember my guide''s name was Harry Dehner and he originally hailed from Pennsylvania. Do any of you Idaho folks know?

On another tack, this month's AOPA Flight Training magazine features a Husky over the Frank Church Wildnerness Area on the cover. Is that by chance anyone we'd know from BCP? 8)
