More info. Mel had done a hell of a lot of Alaska flying in that A-Star and I have worked with him more than a few times.

That normal? Taking a single-pilot VFR A-Star into the bush on a black night with crap weather? Most AWSAR would have NVG, stabilized auto hover, full-IFR. Or wait for morning. Though I guess there was a lot of moon that night - not that it would help in tough weather. You do the same with airplanes in Alaska?
