Alaska Aircrash Investigations

It's a new series on the Smithsonian channel following the NTSB as they go through the aftermath. Watching episode 1, investigating a 207 crash out of Juneau.

The dark side of our passion but something we all need to examine and learn from.

Some coverage about the show when it first aired. I've never seen it but know someone quoted in the ADN article who said it was well done. Given the circumstances, I trust his assessment.

A good friend of mine recovers the majority of crashed planes in Alaska, and is an independent claims adjuster for many insurance companys. He said that a while back he was approached by a production crew to film his recoveries for a pretty good some of money. He told them to pound sand and said that it was unethical in his view. I'm assuming that they went to someone else.

Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

Can certainly see his view. This show really focuses on the work of the NTSB and the causes of the accidents and can be a very good learning tool. I saw nothing unethical about the way this series portrays the events.

I've got a lot of time flying bush Alaska in a 207 and this episode really hit close to home. I personally know a lot of pilots that have had accidents, quite a few who are no longer with us. I made it a point early in my flying days to listen to the old guys because they were old and still alive and study the accidents.

Re: Alaska Aircrash Investigations

That crash was a pure lack of adult supervision. The pilot was washed out of their Memphis operation so they sent her to SE Alaska to learn how to fly. [emoji848]. She should have never been dispatched on a day like that. Too bad because she'd have probably been just fine with a little more oversight. The company has subsequently filed for bankruptcy and has sold off the Alaska operation.

Did they tell that part?

It was obvious at the end it was pilot error while respecting the dead and her family. I shook my head in disbelief when I heard how little Alaska experience she had.

Nobody acts the same in front of a camera. They should be focusing on their job and not allowing camera and crew to contaminate a crash area. This disgusts me to no end, their job is not for entertainment. People died.... for real.

I hear you man, I worked for an outfit that had a reality tv show filmed about it. Proudly say I never made it on camera.

I looked at it more as watching an NTSB report rather than reading one.

That's a great article, I was out in Bethel when Capstone came around. Of course a lot of guys didn't like the "big brother" side of it, but it is a really great tool in the cockpit. I grew fond enough of it that my Bearhawk will have ADS-B in and out.

On the lighter side the article talks about delivering pizza to Napaskiak in a 172. My furthest pizza delivery was Bethel to Chuathbaluk. :)

Side note: that's a nice shot of Lowell Thomas Jr flying one of his two Helio Couriers up near Denali back in the day.
