Alaska Airmen's Show

Anybody going? I will be attending for my first time. Looking forward to it. Guess I have a little cabin fever and just want to be around something besides giant piles of aluminum that burn jet fuel. For veteren's any "must do's" while in the area? I will have a rental car. Search police, I tried a search first to make sure I wasn't starting a new thread on the same subject.

Re: Alaska Airmen's Show

I will be there. I go almost every year. I have tried in the past to meet up with people on this sight but no luck.
I live in the North Pole area and will be driving down for the weekend.

Re: Alaska Airmen's Show

I'll be there as a vendor, Ken and Kevin please feel free to stop by my booth and say hello. I'd be glad to meet you both.

The "must do" for gringo touristas as far as I am concerned is the "$100 hamburger" lunch run up to Talkeetna for Reindeer Chili at the Talkeetna Roadhouse (Thank you Jim Brewer, Steve Long, Don DeVoe!!!).

But you will have to hook up with one of the locals to fly you up there. There are quite a few AK locals who participate on this site.

There's also a gorgeous little airport at a place called Hope, AK, and after a 15 minute hike through the forest you arrive at this movie-worthy 1890's seaside mining town. The restaurant might not be open yet, it was not open when I went in 2010, however this year's Airmen's show is a little later in the year. But again, hook up with some AK locals on this forum, they will have far far more local info than I do.

I will be there both days. I usually hang around the Stoddard's booth since they are my dealer up there. There will be times that I will walk around the show. Will have one of my Steve's Aircraft shirts on so should be easy to spot.

Going to be in the area from the 3rd through the 10th with my wife. looking forward to driving around and enjoying the area when there.

Brian.

Re: Alaska Airmen's Show

Hey! I plan to come to town for the show too. It might be too late for the event at the Fed Ex hanger on Saturday, but I was planning on making the SCO get together on Sat night and catching the exhibits on Sunday. Then we take off on a weeks shopping trip on the Kenai that includes shopping for halibut to take back to Lake Clark for the summer.

The SCO folks wear hawaiian shirts, so every one can pick out a fellow SCO member. I will be one of the very few old gray headed guys with a gray beard in a Hawaiian shirt.

Re: Alaska Airmen's Show

If this is your first trip to ANC or your first trip to the Airman's Show definitely consider hooking up with the supercub.org folks. Lots of good friends to be made, and some of them may already be planning to do some of the things you want to do.

It can be fun to walk around Lake Hood and the tie downs at the strip. Lots of interesting mods to see. Same goes for Merrill Field. Take time to see the aviation museum on the shore of Lake Hood. The Native Heritage museum is quite good if you are interested in the different native groups, their culture, etc. For food you can try Gwennies (bring extra doses of your favorite statin drug), Peggy's is a good diner with great pies across from Merrill Field, and there a other places folks can recommend.

Tidal Wave books can be a fun visit. So are F A Dodge and Stoddards. The are also several good places to pick up survival gear.

It should be a good time!

I'll be there, both days. Great show, and lots of knowledgeable people to visit with.

All that proves is how bad I am with a computer.
