Alaska Aviation Trade Show

So, those of you who have flown in via GA for the Trade Show in the past, what's the skinny? Complete cluster?

Flying into Merrill and then catching a ride is an option, but I'd rather be at Hood or International and walk.

Re: Alaska Aviation Trade Show

Flying into Anchorage Int'l isn't bad in a bug smasher if you have a xponder and lots of spare time. The faster your bird, the better. When I used to fly in and out of there in a Cherokee 6 and a Lance, the Lance was a cinch for approach to get squeezed in with the jets. Keep the speed up and you won't have to do circles for anyone. The Cherokee 6 was always pushed aside and if the weather is at all near SVFR, good luck. Best bet might be Lake Hood, or even better, Merrill. As for departing Int'l, I parked at Signature East, that's a loooooong taxi for runway 32 during rush hour, no matter what you're flying.

Re: Alaska Aviation Trade Show

The problem with Lake Hood strip is the lack of available transient parking. Normally they have only two transient spots. Leased tie-downs are used for transient if they don't have a current lease, but that is highly variable of course (though I admit I haven't called operations yet to check it out.) I was just wondering if anyone knew of alternative day airplane parking, and how full International's transient parking is during the show. I'm going to guess, very.

I'm gonna call the Airmens' office too. Thanks for the help :P

Re: Alaska Aviation Trade Show

If you taxi around to just under the tower on the Lake Hood strip they have quite a bit of transient parking, must be at least 10 spots there. Thats where the Seneca is going to be parked as on the strip it gets covered with dust and gravel!!

Re: Alaska Aviation Trade Show

The Hood tower is in one side of the ANC tower. Hood strip is tower controlled and a Class D surface area. Fly into Hood strip (it lies outside the Charlie airspace for ANC) and ask for taxi to transient parking. There is a taxiway that goes over to ANC, and lots of transient parking there.

BUT, be well aware of the FAR Part 93 airspace around ANC. Part 93 is hard rules, and you MUST abide by the altitudes, routes etc. It's busy airspace. Find out what the routes are, and especially the ALTITUDES for crossing to LHD, and abide by those altitudes. Do otherwise, and it's violation time.

Re: Alaska Aviation Trade Show

Thanks Mike, I'm proficient with the airspace, I fly into either Lake Hood strip or Merrill four or five times a year - but not with the taxi and parking situation on busy weekends

Re: Alaska Aviation Trade Show

Don,

Hood strip is outside the Charlie airspace. No transponder required. So, if you don't have a transponder, you can land at Hood Strip, and taxi to International. Also, some folks are pretty intimidated by landing on International, and taxiing through the beehive ramp area to get to parking. Easy to get lost, but also easy to navigate with a progressive taxi instruction. I've been lost among the 747s before :D .

From Hood Strip, you follow the shoreline of the lake to transient parking on the ANC side
