Alaska backcountry skiing, plane assisted

Made it out backcountry skiing/snowboarding. The supercub shuttle makes it a lot easier than skinning up, more fun too.

Looks awesome! By next year I will be doing some of the same. I got ski flying down pretty well, but havent found anyone to go up in the mountains with yet and dont think going alone would be wise!

Re: Alaska backcountry skiing, plane assisted

That's one of my favorite spots back there...protected enough to be discreet, sun warms it up just a bit more than the bottom lands, and usually good snow despite wind effects. Only issue is with just one plane, doing solo laps is problematic!!! Did you take the 170 into the upper basin (~6200')?

There are a couple other local pilots on other sites with some fantastic photos of northern lights and lit vistas from the lower basin...

There's a spot farther south I call the Battleship; you should check it out sometime. Good for low angle touring, and super forgiving for take off/landing operations. Be a good spot for a spring fly-in day trip. I won't post coords, so it can be a treasure hunt! ;)

Now, if we could just get one more solid hit of snow, that'd make my spring! I feel like we got cheated out of our ski season this year.

I never landed at the upper basin and on that evening I had two passengers and ski gear for three so not a good time for experimenting. Now I need to go out and find the Battleship! I hope at least you left some tracks.

BTW, thanks for all the compliments on the clip. It is fun to make the movies and even more fun if people enjoy them.

Glad to see you guys getting after it this season. Sorry to be out of the action right now, but would love to have a 170 meet-up on skis next year!

That's a really cool old video! I like all the 170 and 140 footage. Especially the 140 on floats with a big horn sheep tied to each side! And then taxiing on the ice with floats. It's also interesting to see how they changed from floats to skis to wheels out in the middle of nowhere.

That was an absolutely stellar video!

Great shots with the music matched to each clip.

It does not get much better than this, and thank you very much for sharing.
