Alaska State Req'd Survival Equipment AS 22.35.110

While not directly aviation-related, survival and basic wilderness skills, sometimes called "bush craft" are an important part of flying the remote backcountry.

Alaska State Req'd Survival Equipment AS 22.35.110

It was noted that the FAA Alaska Flight Supplement ( the pink colored A/FD looking book ) no longer has the list of survival equipment in it. Either I'm just not looking in the correct place, or it was removed because maybe, just maybe, it was deemed a state requirement and not a federal requirement, therefore had no place in the supplement (gov logic at work?) Bad choice to remove it IMHO. [-X I might just need to look harder, but why don't I just cut and paste it here.

So here it is:

Required Survival Equipment - Alaska State Law
AS 22.35.110 Emergency Rations and Equipment

Alaska Law requires that no airman may make a flight inside the state with an aircraft unless emergency equipment is carried.

The following minimum equipment must be carried during summer:
• rations for each occupant to sustain life for one week
• one axe or hatchet
• one first aid kit
• an assortment of tackle such as hooks, flies, lines and sinkers
• one knife
• fire starter
• one mosquito headset for each occupant
• two small signaling devices such as colored smoke bombs, railroad fuses or very pistol shells, in sealed metal containers.

In addition to the equipment required under (1) of this subsection, the following must be carried as minimum equipment from October 15 to April 1 of each year:
• one pair of snowshoes
• one sleeping bag
• one wool blanket or equivalent for each occupant over four

2.A. However, operators of multi-engine aircraft licensed to carry more than 15 passengers need carry only the food, mosquito nets and signaling equipment at all times other than the period from October 15 to April 1 of each year, when two sleeping bags, and one blanket for every two passengers shall also be carried. All of the above requirements as to emergency rations and equipment are considered to be minimum requirements which are to remain in full force and affect, except as further safety measures may be from time to time imposed.

The above information is excerpted from the 8/8/2002 issue of the Alaska Supplement published by the U.S. DOT, FAA and the National Aeronautical Charting Office. http://www.naco.faa.gov/ The Alaska Supplement is the Alaska version of the Airport Facility Directory (A/FD) which is printed for the Southern 48 U.S. States. It may also be found in the Alaska State Statutes, AS 22.35.110. All information should be verified current and accurate by the owner/operator prior to use. Last updated 6/15/2005.

I'm not sure where I can buy railroad fuses, but they sound like fun. The term "Very Pistol" is an old term that now means Flare pistol. I notice there is no requirement for a firearm at all.

Be safe!

From what I could find a 'railroad fuse' appears to be nothing more than a road flare.

I found a old copy of the pink "AK flt sup." from 2004. It includes the Canadian items also.
